Vodafone welcomes back Sony

It has been quite a while since Vodafone stocked any Sony (or Sony Ericsson) devices, thankfully that has all changed and the UK network has now welcomed the Xperia T and Miro into their list, and both can be picked up direct at Vodafone from today. ?There is also a third handset been taken on in the Xperia J and this should be on sale shortly.

Heidi from the Vodafone Tech Team (you might know her better as ^HS on the @VodafoneUK twitter account) has visited the UK Sony HQ and managed to get some hands on time to show these great new devices off.

?For more information check out the Vodafone UK website where you can get a free Xperia T from ?37 a month or a free Miro from just ?13 a month.

No sign of remains in new Mich. search for Hoffa

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) ? Authorities drilled through concrete and removed wet soil samples in a modest Detroit-area neighborhood Friday in the latest effort to find the remains of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, who disappeared in 1975.

There was no immediate sign of human remains, but test results could be ready by Monday, Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said.

"We're not sure if anything is down there. That's what this is all about," Berlin said.

They drilled the concrete floor of a shed attached to a driveway where a recent radar test revealed a shift in the soil. The latest investigation was launched after a man told police that he saw a body being buried under the driveway 35 years ago and "thinks it may have been Jimmy."

Could this search be the one that solves the mystery? Don't get excited: Authorities have already said they don't think the timeline adds up and that it's unlikely Hoffa's body is there. He was last seen July 30, 1975, outside a restaurant in Oakland County, more than 30 miles to the west.

The homeowner, Patricia Szpunar, 72, has lived there since 1988. She said her son uses the 12-by-12 shed to store two workbenches and his motorcycle.

Police detectives appeared two weeks ago and said they may need to search her yard for a dead body.

"I laughed at them," Szpunar said Friday as the work began. "I looked at them and said, 'What? Do you think Jimmy Hoffa is buried in my backyard?' ... They just looked at me, and asked why I said Jimmy Hoffa."

Recently retired Detroit FBI chief Andrew Arena is among the doubters.

"You've got to check it out, but this doesn't sound right," he told The Associated Press. "The working theories that have developed over the years, this really doesn't fit any of those."

Berlin said he's not claiming Hoffa is under the slab, but they are "investigating a body that may be at the location." He said the home may have been owned in the 1970s by a gambler with ties to organized crime.

Feisty and iron-willed in contract talks, Hoffa was an acquaintance of mobsters and adversary to federal officials. He spent time in prison for jury tampering. The day he disappeared, Hoffa was supposed to meet with a New Jersey Teamsters boss and a Detroit mafia captain.

He was declared legally dead in 1982. Previous tips led police to excavate soil in 2006 at a horse farm more than 100 miles north of Detroit, rip up floorboards at a Detroit home in 2004 and search beneath a backyard pool north of the city in 2003.

There were even rumors that Hoffa's remains were ground up and tossed into a Florida swamp, entombed beneath Giants Stadium in New Jersey or obliterated in a mob-owned fat-rendering plant.

Roseville is one of several inner-ring communities that grew quickly as unionized auto factory workers left the city in search of nicer homes and bigger yards.

News of the latest search has brought attention to the mostly working- and middle-class suburb from the curious and naysayers. Slow-moving vehicles have clogged the residential street as camera-wielding neighbors snapped photos for keepsakes.

"I believe it's him. My sister said it is, and she's a psychic," said Mike Smith after ambling up to the home Thursday and shying a bit from the yellow police tape stretched across the driveway.

One local theory that has endured is that Hoffa is beneath the foundation of a downtown Detroit hockey stadium, said 57-year-old Cindi Frank. The daughter of a unionized driver and salesman for a Detroit bakery, Frank remembers conversations about the mobster.

"It was a family thing. Every time we'd go somewhere we'd say, 'Hey, I wonder if Jimmy Hoffa is buried there?' " she said.

Some think the least likely spot for him to turn up might just be the place he does.

"Maybe the most inconspicuous spot might be the place to stash a body or something," said 52-year-old Andrew Kacir, who lives across the street.

(AP) ? NFL officials on the verge of approving a new contract say they're excited to get back to work.

Officials started arriving Friday at a Dallas-area hotel to discuss and vote on an agreement reached with the league late Wednesday. Some planned to fly directly to their assigned cities for Sunday's game.

The deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members.

Some said they thought Monday night's Packers-Seahawks game, which ended in chaos after a call in the end zone gave the Seahawks the winning touchdown instead of a Packers interception, provided the final push toward a settlement. Many fans commentators ? and players in the league ? thought the call was botched.

Monday night's call brought the three-week furor over replacement officials to a fevered pitch.

"It's all history now," head linesman Tom Stabile said. "For us, it was a benefit. It may have been the straw that broke the camel's back."

Line judge Jeff Bergman said he could see the play coming as he watched at home. He noticed that players were starting to take advantage of replacement officials struggling to keep control of the game.

"The last play of the game was something that was going to happen sooner or later," Bergman said. "It gave us and the league an opportunity to get together and hammer out a deal that was going to get hammered out anyway."

Referee Ed Hochuli, who led weekly tests and conference calls for officials to stay sharp during the lockout, declined to say whether the replacements made the right call.

"You really don't want to see that," Hochuli said. "You don't want to see the controversy. You don't want to see teams lose games that they shouldn't have lost, if indeed that's what happened. We're not making a judgment on that."

After three weeks of games marred by mistakes, the regular refs said they were heartened by the support they've received from fans, players and coaches ? even if they don't expect it to last very long now that they're back.

"You're not really beloved by the public. You're tolerated. And to see that type of reception that our guys got last night was really heartwarming," said Bergman, who will head to Green Bay for Sunday's game, one week after Packers players ripped the replacements for calling Monday's disputed play a touchdown.

"After the euphoria of the moment wears off, probably sometime early in the second quarter, it'll be back to regular NFL football mode," Bergman said. "Players will be questioning our judgment, our ancestry. Coaches will be screaming at us. And it'll be life as back to normal on Sundays."

One crew returned to work Thursday night. Cheered from the moment they walked onto the field, the men in stripes ran a smooth and efficient game as the NFL's lockout of officials came to an end with the Baltimore Ravens' 23-16 win over the Browns.

"To just be applauded by 50,000 people prior to anything happening, it was something that kind of chokes you up," referee Gene Steratore said. "It was a very special feeling."

Study adds to efforts to find more effective anti-inflammatory drugs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Researchers have discovered a previously unknown function for a protein that could add to the expanding arsenal of potential new drugs for battling inflammation and tissue fibrosis in a number of disease processes.

Scientists from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center report Sept. 27 in Developmental Cell that, a protein called TRPC6 mediates a molecular pathway critical to the body's repair processes following various forms of injury caused by disease.

After injury -- such as that caused by a heart attack -- the TRPC6-controlled pathway prompts cells called fibroblasts to change into myofibroblasts, according to the study. Myofibroblasts secrete a substance called extracellular matrix, an important building block needed for wound healing and tissue remodeling, which includes inflammation and scarring.

"Our study suggests that a TRPC inhibitor could be a good anti-fibrotic or anti-inflammatory agent in heart failure, muscular dystrophy, pulmonary disorders and other diseases where tissue fibrosis becomes a problem," said Jeffery Molkentin, PhD, principal investigator and a scientist at the Cincinnati Children's Heart Institute and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. "As well, activation of the TRPC pathway with an agonist compound could be used in select situations to enhance wound healing."

Although the body needs a certain amount of inflammation and scarring to heal and return to normal function, in chronic diseases the process can get stuck in the "on" mode. This can lead to fibrosis (the buildup of excess connective tissues) and cause serious medical complications. Effectively and safely controlling complex inflammation processes in these situations remains an unmet clinical need, and is also the impetus behind a concerted effort in biomedical research to find new therapeutic options.

Researchers on the current study were encouraged by how effectively the TRPC6 pathway (TRPC6-calcineurin-NFAT) appeared to influence the transformation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, the secretion of extracellular matrix, wound healing and fibrosis. The authors wrote that identification of this cell repair signaling mechanism "offers an additional avenue for developing targeted intervention points in fibrotic diseases."

Calcineurin is a calcium-dependent enzyme involved in the immune system, the regulation of T-cells and also important in the function of heart cells. NFAT (nuclear factor of activated T-cells) is a family of proteins important to the immune system and the development of different tissues in the body.

Including first author Jennifer Davis, PhD. -- a member of Molkentin's laboratory -- the researchers started their study by running a genomic screen of molecules that regulate the transformation of fibroblast cells into myofibroblasts. The screen and subsequent laboratory tests identified TRPC6 as a promising candidate. Prior to the current study, TRPC6 had not been associated with fibrosis, although it has been linked to other cellular functions in kidneys, skin cells and hippocampal neurons of the brain.

The scientists used a virus expressing TRPC6 to infect cell cultures of mouse embryonic fibroblasts, rat cardiac fibroblasts and human dermal fibroblasts. TRPC6-infected fibroblasts fully activated the transformation to myofibroblasts, while fibroblasts lacking TRPC6 were resistant to transformation. In TRPC-6 gene deleted mice, the animals showed impaired dermal and cardiac wound healing after injury.

Molkentin said there are TRPC inhibitors in the early stage drug development pipeline, although their initial design has not targeted heart disease, inflammation or fibrosis. He added the current study may provide an impetus for widening the development focus to include these medical needs.

Also collaborating were researchers from the Laboratory of Neurology at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences/National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Pediatrics and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

The Humble Business Card Gets Superpowers With NFC - Mashable

moo-nfc-cards-3

Apple may have skipped near-field communication in the iPhone 5, but that hasn?t stopped everyone else from getting on board the NFC train. The latest passenger: Moo.com, which just started experimenting with NFC business cards, with a planned rollout in 2013.

You may remember Moo as the folks who brought us Facebook business cards earlier this year. Now they?re giving the whole experience of exchanging contact information a needed upgrade with short-range NFC tech.

It works like this: You order NFC cards from Moo, specifying what you want the NFC tag to do. It could just contain contact information, but it can also include actions like presenting a video, or an app download, or your latest tweets. When you hand someone your card, and they tap it with an NFC-enabled smartphone, the preprogrammed magic happens. (Check out an explainer video below.)

The process isn?t without its limitations. First, obviously the person will need an NFC phone. While many popular Android phones have it (and so do the coming crop of Windows Phones, if anyone cares), Apple is out.

SEE ALSO: Is It Time to Finally Ditch Your Paper Business Cards?

Second, the cards will likely be a lot more expensive than conventional cards. Moo hasn?t revealed pricing, but it?s telling that they?re only giving current customers who place a business card order a single NFC card (for the first 150,000 customers). Moo calls it an ?open beta test,? and the NFC chip will include an electronic version of the card?s contact info.

However, the cards come with a big bonus, too: Customers will be able to reprogram the NFC chip to customize individual cards. A global manager might want to change the material presented depending on what part of the world he?s in, or, if you have the cards for a while, you?ll probably want to switch up the projects you present to new clients. Or you could just have fun with it and show a different random YouTube video on each card.

While the cost is still a question mark ? a big one ? we like the idea of flashing custom content to people with our cards. Of course, we stopped the silly practice of writing down phone numbers and emails years ago with the dawn of apps like CardMunch. NFC is progress, as long as the price stays under control.

What do you think? Is NFC a welcome upgrade to business cards? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013

By Neil J. Rubenking

Trend Micro stuffs most of the security suite suite components into their entry-level antivirus product, and adds all the rest in their full-scale security suite. So what's left to distinguish Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013 ? Quite a lot, as it turns out. This mega-suite incorporates Trend Micro's separately-available password protection and backup/sync products, as well as an additional parental control system that focuses on social networking.

The only visible difference between the main window of Maximum Security and Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2013 is the program name in the title bar. Virtually everything else is the same, as most of the added features get installed separately. I'll summarize shared features here. For full details you'll want to read the reviews of Internet Security and of Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+ 2013 .

Antivirus Protection
Installing Trend Micro on my dozen malware-infested test systems required a lot of help and ancillary cleanup programs from tech support. Trend Micro flagged all of my analysis tools as Trojans simply based on their super-low prevalence; I had to rescue them all from quarantine.

Trend Micro detected 76 percent of the threats, the same as Kaspersky PURE 2.0 Total Security . Norton 360 (2013) and Kaspersky Internet Security (2013) detected 89 percent. Norton scored highest of recent products, with 6.6 points while Trend Micro got 6.1 points. The article How We Test Malware Removal explains how I come up with these scores.

Related Story

Trend Micro detected 97 percent of threats in my malware blocking test and scored 9.3 points. The top scorer in this test was SecureIT Plus with 9.7 points. Tested against my previous malware collection, Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete managed a perfect 10 of 10 possible points. For an explanation of my malware blocking test and its scoring, see How We Test Malware Blocking.

Related Story

Trend Micro doesn't participate in testing with all of the independent labs. Those that do test Trend Micro technology rate it good, not great. The chart below summarizes recent independent lab tests. To learn more about the labs and their tests, see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests.

Good Protection Against Frauds and Spammers
The entry-level antivirus includes effective protection against fraudulent websites that try to steal your login credentials. In testing, its detection rate lagged 16 percentage points behind antiphishing champ Norton, but it beat Internet Explorer alone by 28 points. That's impressive given that the majority of antiphishing solutions I've tested score worse than IE alone. For details on how I find very new phishing sites and calculate these scores, see How We Test Antiphishing.

Related Story

I had to let the Trend Micro antispam test run overnight, as downloading and categorizing email took four times as long as with no spam filter installed. It misfiled just 0.2 percent of valid mail as spam and let less than 11 percent of undeniable spam into the Inbox. That's better than most, though a few suites have proven still more accurate. For a full run-down of my antispam testing technique, see How We Test Antispam.

Related Story

The entry-level antivirus and Internet Security both mark up dangerous links in search results and on social networking pages. They also include a tool to tune your Facebook privacy settings. Trend Micro relies on the built-in Windows Firewall to block incoming threats, simply adding a Firewall Booster for additional firewall protection.

iPhone 5 paint may chip, Apple exec says that's 'normal'

Since the iPhone 5 hit store shelves on Friday, complaints about the propensity of the?device's paint?job to scratch and chip have started flooding in.?But according to an email exchange Apple senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller allegedly had with a customer such cosmetic issues are "normal."

According to?9to5 Mac's Seth Weintraub, one of the blog's readers sent an email to Schiller, pointing out that his iPhone 5 is showing "some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone."?He asked what he and others who are seeing this issue can do and whether there are any plans to fix it.

The reply Schiller sent, according to this customer, explained that "[a]ny aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal."

Schiller's somewhat brief?reply reminds us?of the time when late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told a?customer who complained about the iPhone 4 reception issues he experienced when his hand covered the device's antennas that he should "[j]ust avoid holding it that way."

Of course, that email preceded what is now referred to as "Antennagate" and?a press conference during which Apple addressed these reception issues and offered every iPhone 4 owner a free "Bumper" case.

Just like the iPhone 4 reception issues reported back then, the cosmetic issues reported in the last few days?appear to only affect some iPhone 5 owners. NBC News tech?editor Wilson Rothman and I got the?iPhone 5 on the same day,?but while his is already showing wear (as you can see in the images above) after spending time in and out of his jeans pocket, my own device, also black, is still in pristine condition. And that's after it?spent a lot of time in a purse pocket along with other smartphones, loose change and my house keys.

Because of the strange way our experiences parallel the iPhone 4 reception woes, we can't help but wonder if we'll soon be hearing more on this,?possibly even from Apple, which has yet to reply to our inquiry. Given the fact that you can't upgrade hardware as easily as software (or maps), there's certainly a chance of a "Paintgate" in our near future.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Human brains develop wiring slowly, differing from chimpanzees

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Research comparing brain development in humans and our closest nonhuman primate relatives, chimpanzees, reveals how quickly myelin in the cerebral cortex grows, shedding light on the evolution of human cognitive development and the vulnerability of humans to psychiatric disorders. Myelin is the fatty insulation surrounding axon connections of the brain.

Recent research by Chet Sherwood, associate professor of anthropology in Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, along with Daniel Miller, a former GW graduate student, and other colleagues, reveals this key difference in brain development between human and chimpanzee. The findings were recently published in the September 24th edition Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

In the article, Dr. Sherwood and co-authors write that the development of myelin from birth to adulthood in humans is protracted in comparison to chimpanzees. In humans, myelin develops slowly during childhood, followed by a delayed period of maturity beyond adolescence and into early adulthood. In contrast, in chimpanzees, the development of myelin already starts at a relatively more mature level at birth and ceases development long before puberty.

?These observations indicate that a marked delay in the development schedule of the human neocortex may play an important role in the growth of connections that contribute to our species-specific cognitive abilities,? wrote Dr. Sherwood and co-authors.

The developmental timing of myelination is important because it establishes connectivity among parts of the growing brain, which is essential to higher-order cognitive functions, such as decision-making and emotional regulation. These cognitive functions are known to mature relatively late in humans, after the time of adolescence. Also, this period of persistent myelin development during early adulthood in humans is a time of particular vulnerability to neuropsychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.

Microsoft deliberately wasted energy at data center to avoid fine, says NY Times

Microsoft power wasting

Microsoft's desire to avoid a fine combined with a power company's strict electricity usage rules resulted in the software giant deliberately wasting millions of watts of power, according to the New York Times. Redmond's Quincy data center, which houses Bing, Hotmail and other cloud-based servers, had an agreement in place with a Washington state utility containing clauses which imposed penalties for under-consumption of electricity. A $210,000 fine was levied last year, since the facility was well below its power-use target, which prompted Microsoft to deliberately burn $70,000 worth of electricity in three days "in a commercially unproductive manner" to avoid it, according to its own documents. The utility board capitulated and reduced the amend to $60k, but the messy situation seems a far cry from Redmond's pledge to become carbon neutral by this summer.

The Hobbit, a Feature Length Movie Made by London Schoolboys

Suck it, Peter Jackson! A team of schoolboys from Tower House prep in southwest London have released their own feature-length version of The Hobbit:

Seventy boys aged eight to 13 from Tower House School star in their own feature-length version of Tolkien?s classic, which includes battle scenes and even a CGI dragon.

The 90-minute movie, filmed at locations around the country, was put together ?on a shoestring? and required some of its young actors to spend hours in make-up being fitted with fake scars and prosthetic noses. [...]

Paul Geary, head of drama at the school in East Sheen and the film?s director, said: ?The boys showed great dedication to this project which shows the quality of drama that a school can produce.

"It was our ambition to do something totally unique, something no other school has ever done. As far as I am aware we are the first prep school to do a full feature-length film.?

Who had the Worst Week in Washington? NPR's Vivian Schiller.

If not for bad luck, Vivian Schiller wouldn't have any luck at all.

Until this past week, Schiller was the chief executive of National Public Radio. That was before Ron Schiller, the outgoing fundraising director for NPR (and no relation), was caught on video telling two conservative activists posing as representatives of a fake Muslim charity that the tea party is "seriously racist" and that conservatives are "anti-intellectual." Um, not good.

Even worse for Schiller - Vivian, that is - it wasn't the first public relations hit for NPR during her two-year tenure.

That came last October when Ellen Weiss, the top news editor, fired political analyst Juan Williams after he said that flying with people dressed in "Muslim garb" made him "nervous." Schiller made matters worse by suggesting that Williams's comments on a Fox News show should have been "between him and his psychiatrist or his publicist."

Weiss eventually resigned in January after an internal review of her termination of Williams, and the NPR board of directors stripped Schiller of her bonus.

Hoping to begin the image-rehabilitation process - not to mention answer the Republican critics aiming to zero out the $430 million in federal funds for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting - Schiller delivered a keynote address at the National Press Club on Monday.

"At a time when our industry is cutting back, when punditry is drowning real news and thoughtful analysis, NPR is moving continuously forward with quality reporting and storytelling," Schiller declared.

Less than 48 hours later, she was gone, resigning before she was fired despite the fact that, by all accounts, she helped expand NPR's online and offline business during her time in the top job.

Vivian Schiller, for all the things you didn't consider, you had the Worst Week in Washington. Congrats, or something.

Education only panacea for all ills of Pakistan | PakMed Info Forum ...

KARACHI ? Karachi University (KU) Vice Chancellor Muhammad Qaiser has said that knowledge is the only solution to all problems of Pakistan.
He said without making progress in the education sector the country cannot attain the desired development. Now the progresses of nations in the world are measured with reference to the education, while nations are known for their achievements in education, health and science and technologies, he said, while speaking at an inaugural ceremony of four-day 13th international symposium on natural product held on Saturday morning. The symposium was organised by International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University (KU). About 600 delegates from 40 countries are participating in the global moot, inaugurated by KU Vice Chancellor.
The KU Vice Chancellor said that there is a dire need to make our country stronger through science and technology to fight against the enemies of the country and humanity. He said, ?In the today?s world, nations are known for their achievements in education. Development is no more considered to be the development of infrastructure, roads, dams, and bridges. The whole notion of development has been changed. It is now defined and measured with reference to the education, enlightenment, tolerance, self-fulfilment and productivity. The University of Karachi rightly takes pride to be the venue of the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences. This institution is a major source of strength for the university. We are also pleased to learn that the ICCBS has been selected as one of the five centres of excellence by the OIC. This is indeed an honour for the University of Karachi, and for the nation at large.?
Former Higher Education Commission Chairman Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman said that around 54 per cent of Pakistani nation is below the age of 19, which is the real wealth of the country; science can bridge the gape between people of different races, languages, countries and regions, as science is beyond boundaries. He said that science can make all countries closer in the world, which is the miracle of science. Knowledge is the only key driver to get socio-economic progress in the world. He said, ?Pakistani population is attributed with the large segment of youth, which is the real wealth of the country. Strong educational and research institutions play a crucial role in the development of any nation by providing world class human resources.?
ICCBS Director Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry said ICCBS has become the largest and finest institutions in this region. In last two years, we increased our PhD enrolment from 310 to 480, expanded our international collaboration with 23 new MoUs, welcomed over 180 foreign scholars from some 50 nations, published over 600 international research papers, patented 20 new findings internationally and established several new institutions, he added.
?The aim of the symposium was to bring together the leading experts in the field of natural products sciences from all around the world and form global partnership for sustainable utilisation of natural resources for the common benefits of humanity and rapid development of the countries in the south,? he said. From 1971 to date, Dr Rahman is the soul behind the miracle of ICCBS. From little known institution to one of the most prestigious research establishments of the world, is the miracle of Prof Atta?s leadership and his lifelong efforts, he said and added that the ICCBS is the bright face of our nation, an institution par excellence, a place where scholars of all continents and nations dream to visit, a model for others to follow, an oasis in the waste desert of ignorance. The ICCBS is not an institution, it is the spirit of Pakistan, and proof of what Pakistani nation can do under the right leadership, he said.
Meanwhile, 70th birthday of Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, ICCBS patron-in-chief, University of Karachi and former Chairman Higher Education Commission was also celebrated on the same day at Multipurpose Hall just after the inaugural session of the 13th international symposium. On the occasion, the colleagues, students, friends and scholar expressed their views about the services and personality of the great scientist. Prof Rahman also cut the cake among the hundreds of people. During the ceremony, the book titled, ?Atta-ur-Rahman: Ik Ehed Saaz Shakhsiat?, written by ICCBS Director Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, was also launched.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Iqbal said he was pleased to report here that we are not the one only celebrating the 70th birthday of the great scientist Atta-ur-Rahman; the scientists of the whole world of science, and hundreds of students of Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, spread in five continents, and belonging to all castes and creeds, are celebrating the 70th birthday of this legend in his life time.

In the meantime, let?s take a moment to enjoy her fabulous silver strapless dress that she wore last night for the pre-Emmy parties. Julie slipped on this metallic embellished cocktail number from the Fall 2012 Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti collection.

The dress is pretty overall, but I like the studded detailing covering the bodice and scattered about throughout the design.

She accessorized with silver as well, including a Jimmy Choo ?Tube? clutch and a pair of matching open toe platform ?Yvesse? pumps by Brian Atwood. This look was complete with diamond jewelry and a soft curl to her blonde tresses.

Israel hands over bodies of 3 killed on Egypt border

EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma?an) -- Israel has handed to Egypt the bodies of three suspected Jihadists who crossed Israel's borders and clashed with Israeli soldiers killing one and seriously injuring another early Friday.

An Egyptian security source told Ma?an that Israeli and Egyptian military commanders met to exchange information and make security arrangements for future. After that the bodies were delivered to Egypt.

The source highlighted that one of the person's remains was dismembered as a result of an explosive belt around the operative's body. The other two bodies were identifiable.

According to the source, the meeting between Egyptian and Israeli commanders was positive and both sides were cooperative and reflected a high level of security cooperation.

Israeli troops killed three militants along the Israel-Egypt border on Friday, and an Israeli soldier also died in the exchange of fire, the army said.

A group of militants entered Israel through a gap in fence construction halfway down the border and opened fire on Israeli soldiers, an army spokesman said. A nearby patrol returned fire, killing three people, he said.

Security sources said earlier that at least two soldiers were wounded.

Listing of the Week: A greatest great room in Florida

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

Zillow

This Florida waterfront estate oozes opulence.

1160 South Ocean Boulevard, Lantana, Florida

For sale: $17.5 million

There are million-dollar homes scattered throughout the country, but million-dollar rooms are a little less common. This oceanside Lantana home has a few rooms that fit in that category.

Recently featured on HGTV's "Million Dollar Rooms," this estate blends Mediterranean style with Florida flair. The home opens with an enormous, 16-foot-high, wrought-iron door leading out to an open-air courtyard and beyond it, the ocean.

"You don't know what to look at first ? the ocean or the terrace," said listing agent Eileen Kedersha of One Sotheby's International. "You can imagine all the doors thrown open and a beautiful party in the courtyard."

While the courtyard is incredible, it's the great room that's one of the showstoppers.

Measuring 51 feet long with a 25-foot-high onyx bar, an imposing fireplace, and all glass doors, the space is perhaps what inspired the phrase "great room," says Kedersha. Crystal-studded seahorse bar handles and pulls line the back of the bar, and the walls are covered with beige wallpaper studded with pearls.

The next jaw-dropping room on the list is the master suite. Measuring 3,000 square feet, the room boasts his-and-her closets, master bath, massage room, and of course a secret passage leading to the master office.

"You would never know there's a study back there ? the doors look just like bookshelves," Kedersha said.

And to complete the James Bond-feel of the estate, there's a private elevator leading from the home down to the 15-car garage.

It's opulent, says Kedersha, but it's tasteful.?"Every room is inviting."

According to Zillow's mortgage calculator, a monthly payment on the home would be $61,855, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year mortgage.

Zillow

The master bedroom has high ceilings, a glass chandelier and fireplace.

Zillow

The enormous great room includes a number of grand features.

Zillow

At the center of the home is a large courtyard.

Research uncovers path to defect-free thin films

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? A team led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Ho Nyung Lee has discovered a strain relaxation phenomenon in cobaltites that has eluded researchers for decades and may lead to advances in fuel cells, magnetic sensors and a host of energy-related materials.

The finding, published in Nano Letters, could change the conventional wisdom that accommodating the strain inherent during the formation of epitaxial thin films necessarily involves structural defects, said Lee, a member of the Department of Energy lab's Materials Science and Technology Division. Instead, the researchers found that some materials, in this case cobaltite, form structurally well ordered atomic patterns that can change their magnetic properties and effectively minimize the size mismatch with the crystalline substrate.

Epitaxial thin films, used in nanotechnology and semiconductor fabrication, are created by growing a crystal layer of one material on another in such a way that the crystalline structures align. The challenge is to grow the film coherently with minimal defects, which can have a catastrophic effect on a material's performance.

"We discovered properties that were not readily apparent in crystal, or bulk, form, but in thin-film form we were able to clearly see the atomically ordered lattice structure of lanthanum cobaltite," Lee said. "With this knowledge, we hope to be able to tailor the physical properties of a material for many information and energy technologies."

The researchers studied the material in different strain states using scanning transmission electron microscopy complemented by X-ray and optical spectroscopy. Using these instruments, the scientists could see unconventional strain relaxation behavior that produced stripe-like lattice patterns. The result is a material with useful magnetic properties and highly suitable for sensors and ionic conductors used in, for example, batteries.

This discovery and the ability to engineer the structure of materials could lead to advanced cathode materials in solid oxide fuel cells and batteries that can be charged much faster.

"Since cobaltites are promising candidates for magnetic sensors, ionic conductors and surface catalysts, this discovery provides a new understanding that can be used for artificial tuning of magnetism and ionic activities," Lee said.

Contributing to the paper were ORNL's Woo Seok Choi and Hyoungjeen Jeen and authors from Seoul National University, the University of British Columbia, IFW Dresden's Leibniz Institute for Solid Sate and Materials Research, Max Planck-UBC Centre for Quantum Materials, Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research and the University of Saskatchewan.
