Blues legend Johnson could get highway honor
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? The Mississippi House has voted to name part of Interstate 55 for blues great Robert Johnson, whose most famous song is about a crossroads.
House Bill 166 would designate a 13-mile stretch in Copiah County as the Robert L. Johnson Memorial Highway. Johnson was born in the county in 1911.
Legend says Johnson gained extraordinary guitar skills by selling his soul to the devil at a crossroads. Some versions name that corner as U.S. highways 49 and 61 in the Mississippi Delta, some 200 miles north of Copiah County.
Despite a short life, Johnson influenced later musicians such as Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones.
The House passed the bill Thursday after some lawmakers jokingly ensured it wasn't named for a living colleague, Democratic state Rep. Robert Johnson of Natchez.

Detox Before You Retox | 34th Street Magazine
Day 1, Friday
Breakfast: A banana
Lunch: Kiwis and strawberries from the Fruit Salad cart at 37th and Spruce
Dinner: Quinoa with onions and mushrooms sauteed in olive oil and garlic, steamed peas, a dash of cold?pressed EVOO and basil pesto. Plus, a clementine for dessert.
Snack: Black olives
Drinks: Water (lots) and Whole Foods fresh?squeezed orange juice
What I did: Slept in, career fair, office hours, grocery store, worked on a paper
How I felt: After the first day, I?m more tired than usual, though,it?s likely from my week, not my lack of protein. I feel a little nauseated after eating a few things I normally avoid and constantly make fun of my health?nut housemates for loving (read: quinoa). Otherwise, I feel well and my biggest hurdle is figuring out what I?m allowed to eat ? not keeping myself from eating all of that leftover Valentine?s Day candy sent from home.
Day 2, Saturday
Breakfast: Honeydew melon
Lunch: A smoothie (strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, peach and fresh?squeezed orange juice)
Dinner: Snap peas, sliced cucumber, broccoli and mushrooms with red pepper hummus
Snack: Black olives
Drinks: Water (lots) & fresh?squeezed orange juice
What I did: Worked on a paper, visited the Morris Arboretum, saw a movie
How I felt: I felt a lot better today than I did yesterday in terms of nausea and energy levels. However, I definitely felt hungrier and the raw veggies weren?t quite cutting it. I?m not going to lie, I wouldn?t mind a steak right now.
Day 3, Sunday
Breakfast: Strawberries and kiwi
Lunch : Black olive hummus with wheat?free gluten?free crackers
Dinner: Steamed peas and strawberries for dessert
Snack: Grapes
Drinks: Water (lots) & fresh?squeezed orange juice
What I did: Shopping for groceries, meeting, work
How I felt: I felt pretty tired throughout the day and a bit headache?y at the end. Nothing a few strawberries before bed couldn?t solve!
Day 4, Monday
Breakfast: A Clementine
Lunch: Cucumber slices and mushrooms with basil pesto
Dinner: Homemade lentil soup (lentils, split peas, cold?pressed EVOO, garlic, onions and spices)
Snack: Grapes
Drinks: Water (lots) & fresh?squeezed orange juice
What I did: Class, gym, work
How I felt: All day, I felt very energetic and healthy. I woke up before my alarm and had a great workout after class. Unfortunately, the night ends with me feeling extremely nauseated. Truth is, I?m not the best cook.
Day 5, Tuesday
Breakfast: An apple
Lunch: Kiwis and strawberries from Fruit Salad
Dinner: Steamed broccoli and cauliflower with frozen fruit for dessert
Snack: Banana
Drinks: Water (lots) & fresh?squeezed orange juice
What I did: Class, lunch with friends, more class, work, meeting
How I felt: I woke up before my alarm feeling awake and great (second day in a row, and this never happens to me). I even survived two three?hour classes without coffee ? quite the feat. But honestly, at the end of day five, I do feel healthier.
My conclusion: Restricted to just the basics, I whined through the temptations of dinners with friends and leftover Valentine?s candy. While losing eight pounds in five days didn?t exactly suck, I still think Kate Moss?s whole ?Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels? thing is crap. I want chocolate.

George Huguely V: Guilty of Second-Degree Murder in Yeardley Love Slaying
George Huguely V, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player, has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love.
A Maryland jury convicted him late Wednesday.
The UVA lacrosse murder case began in May 2010 and gained national attention, after Love, a popular, all-American athlete, was found dead at the school.
There were no obvious physical wounds. Huguely, 24, admitted to having an altercation with his ex, but his lawyer denied her death was intentional.
Huguely pleaded not guilty to six charges, including first-degree murder and felony murder in commission of a robbery, professing his innocence ... mostly.
His defense attorney Francis Lawrence said during closing arguments:
"Yes, George contributed to her death. But no, he didn't kill her ... he left there with her alive, and that is not in dispute. There was no intentional killing."
"She wasn't dead when he left."
After deliberating for nine hours, the jury decided Huguely was guilty of second degree murder, which can hold a sentence of anywhere from 5-40 years in jail.
Huguely was found not guilty on the most serious charge of first-degree murder, but he was also convicted of grand larceny stemming from the same event.

American, French journalists killed in Syria
American journalist Marie Colvin and award-winning French photographer Remi Ochlik were killed Wednesday in the besieged Syrian city of Homs, opposition activists and a French official said.

Colvin, from Oyster Bay, New York, was veteran foreign correspondent for the U.K.'s Sunday Times newspaper. Ochlik won a World Press Photo award earlier this month for his work covering the uprising in Libya.
A witness contacted by Reuters from Amman said shells hit the house in the Baba Amr district of Homs in which they were staying and a rocket hit them when they tried to escape.
Video broadcast from Homs showed bodies among the rubble, one with its legs severed by shrapnel.
Video: US and French journalists killed in Syria (on this page)Activists in Homs told Reuters that at least two other foreign journalists were wounded. One was identified as British photographer Paul Conroy. An American female journalist was also in very serious condition, the activists said.
"Up to this point we have two dead. They are still under the rubble because the shelling hasn't stopped," an activist in Homs named Omar told Reuters. "No one can get close to the house."
"There is another American female journalist who is in a really serious condition, she really needs urgent care," Omar added. The house was hit by more than 10 rockets, he said.
President Bashar Assad's crackdown on protests against his rule killed 5,400 people in 2011 alone, according to the United Nations. Hundreds more have been killed since, activist groups say. One activist group has put the current death toll at more than 7,300.
Colvin: 'Snipers all around'
In a news report aired by U.K. broadcaster ITN on Tuesday, Colvin talked about the situation in Homs and its Baba Amr suburb.
"The Syrians are not allowing civilians to leave. Anyone who gets on the street, if they are not hit by a shell, they are sniped," she said in the report.
"There are snipers all around Baba Amr on the high buildings," Colvin said. "I think the sickening thing is the complete merciless nature ... they are hitting civilian buildings absolutely mercilessly, without caring. The scale of it is just shocking."
Speaking to BBC News Tuesday, Colvin compared the situation in Baba Amr to the massacre of Srebrenica during the Bosnian war in 1995, when Serb forces killed more than 7,000 Muslims.
She said there were 28,000 living in Baba Amr and "they are here because they can't get out."
Colvin told the BBC that she had counted 14 shells falling on the suburb within 30 seconds early Tuesday morning.
She spoke about watching a 2-year-old child dying from shrapnel wounds in a makeshift clinic in an apartment, saying it was "absolutely horrific."
"The doctor just said 'I cannot do anything.' His little tummy just kept heaving until he died," Colvin told the BBC. The child was among a "constant stream" of injured civilians coming to the apartment for treatment.
'One of the greats'
Reuters reported the names of Ochlik and Colvin, citing opposition activists and witnesses. NBC News' Richard Engel also said on his Twitter account "Syrian opposition contact in homs tells nbc news marie colvin and remi ochlik killed, third reporter seriously injured."
Earlier, as the news was emerging, he tweeted "Marie Colvin is one of the greats. Been everywhere. Would be a tragic loss."
Colvin had been a foreign correspondent for Britain's Sunday Times for two decades, reporting from the world's most dangerous places.
Colvin, who was aged in her 50s, lost the sight in one eye after being hit by shrapnel while reporting from Sri Lanka in 2001. In public appearances after that attack, she wore a black eye patch.
Ochlik's website says he had covered the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2008, presidential elections in Haiti in 2010, and the Arab Spring uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt last year in addition to the revolt that ousted Moammar Gadhafi in Libya.
A French government spokesman later confirmed their deaths. News International, which owns The Sunday Times, told NBC News that it had no comment.
The New York Times reported that Colvin and Ochlik's deaths follow the killings of several citizen journalists in Syria. One, Rami el Sayed, a well-known videoblogger in Baba Amr, died Tuesday.
NYT: Pulitzer-winning journalist Shadid dies in Syria
The paper said some activists fear the Assad regime is deliberately targeting journalists to stop news of what is happening in Syria from being reported.
"It's too much of a coincidence ... There are reports of planes flying around and they may be looking for the satellite uplinks," The New York Times quoted a Syrian activist in Cairo as saying.
Shells had reportedly rained down on rebellious districts of Homs at a rate of 10 per minute at one point on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. Homs is Syria's third-largest city.
The Red Cross has called for a daily two-hour cease-fire so that it can deliver emergency aid to the wounded and sick.
Activists: Scores killed as Syria targets civilians
Earlier, an opposition activists' group said Syrian troops and militiamen loyal to Assad chased, captured and then shot dead 27 young men in three northern villages.
The men, all civilians, were mostly shot in the head or chest on Tuesday in their homes or in streets in the villages of Idita, Iblin and Balshon in Idlib province near the border with Turkey, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said.
Several YouTube videos taken by local activists in Idlib, which could not be independently confirmed, showed bodies of young men with bullet wounds lying in streets and in houses.
Video: Syrian forces bombard Homs (on this page)Meanwhile, the Obama administration has opened the door slightly to international military assistance for Syria's armed opposition.
In coordinated messages, the White House and State Department said Tuesday they still hoped for a political solution.
But, faced with the daily onslaught by the Assad regime against Syrian civilians, officials dropped the administration's previous strident opposition to arming anti-regime forces. However, it remained unclear what, if any, role the U.S. might play in providing such aid.
"We don't want to take actions that would contribute to the further militarization of Syria because that could take the country down a dangerous path," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday.
"But we don't rule out additional measures if the international community should wait too long and not take the kind of action that needs to be taken," he added.
NYT: US should help Syria rebels, McCain says
The administration had previously said flatly that more weapons were not the answer to the Syrian situation.
There had been no mention of "additional measures," despite daily reports from Syrian activists of dozens of deaths from government attacks.
At the State Department, spokeswoman Victoria Nuland used nearly identical language to describe the administration's evolving position.
"From our perspective, we don't believe that it makes sense to contribute now to the further militarization of Syria," she told reporters.
"What we don't want to see is the spiral of violence increase. That said, if we can't get Assad to yield to the pressure that we are all bringing to bear, we may have to consider additional measures," she added.
The Associated Press, Reuters, NBC News and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

Equine Supplements And Making Use Of Acid Reflux Disease ...
Equine supplements can help your horse have lower heartburns. For us humans, alcohol lovers would often love to match their beverage with hot and spicy dishes and greasy and fatty foods. The right blend makes the drinking perfect to the taste buds. Regrettably though, this really is harmful to the esophagus and the belly. The alcohol, the spicy dishes plus the greasy and fatty foods leads to acid reflux disease or also called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Other reasons for acid reflux are being pregnant, genetic effects, existence of infection in the intestinal tract, and the Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs).
Heartburn or acid reflux is a chronic problem. When a person is affected with it, it will become a life-long challenge. Injury within the wind pipe also is a persistent condition. Even if the esophagus has healed with medication and it is being prevented, the injury will come back in most patients within a couple of months. As soon as treatment for said illness is begun, it usually needs to be continued consistently.
The body has systems to protect itself from the side effects of reflux and acid. Most reflux happens throughout the day when folks are upright. In said position, the refluxed fluid is more prone to flow back down into the stomach due to gravity. Furthermore, while individuals are awake, they continually swallow, whether or not there?s reflux or otherwise. Each time individuals allow the reflux liquid to slip back into the belly. The final body defense to flow back is the salivary glands within the mouth. These glands produce saliva, which has bicarbonate. Each time a person swallows, the bicarbonate-containing spittle glides to the wind pipe. The bicarbonate neutralizes the tiny amount of acid that keeps within the esophagus.
Basically, acid reflux disease medications inhibit the production or discharge of pepsin produced by the chief cells and hydrochloric acid produced by the parietal tissues in the stomach. Other drugs may not totally slow down the production but they neutralize the acid. The acid reflux disorder medications are the Histamine Blockers or the H2 receptor antagonists. Histamine induces a pump within the abdomen that releases hydrochloric acid. The H2 receptor antagonists prevent the histamine from stimulating this pump.
Equine supplements could actually help your horse fight ailments particularly heartburn. For us, among the acid reflux medicines is the Cimetidine which was released in 1975. It has a short half-life and short amount of action. The three most popular H2 blockers are Ranitidine, Famotidine and Nizatidine. They are more potent than Cimetidine because as well as blocking gastric acid secretions, they furthermore promote recovery of the ulcer by eliminating its cause. They also have longer duration of action. As the clich goes, an oz of prevention is much better than one pound of cure, you can avoid having an acid reflux or GERD by staying away from a lot of smoking and alcohol, and by eating a smaller amount of spicy and greasy food. When using NSAIDs, make sure to take it following meals. Finally, avoid stress since it stimulates the release of the lethal acid.
Equine Supplement specialists have numerous advice and expert thoughts on how you take excellent care of your favorite equines using the best equine supplements inside their day-to-day diet program.

'Prima Donna' has US premiere at Brooklyn Academy
NEW YORK (AP) ? Rufus Wainwright's "Prima Donna" took an unusual path to its United States premiere, switching companies and sopranos.
Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and then dropped four years ago in a language dispute, "Prima Donna" opened Sunday in a performance by the beleaguered New York City Opera at the Brooklyn Academy of Music ? a run threatened by labor strife until a contract was reached with unions last month.
At times haunting, at times filled with shimmering lyrical passages and at times maddeningly slow, the first opera by the 38-year-old singer-songwriter showed promise and was greeted with an enthusiastic response. It simultaneously delights and disappoints, a melodic throwback to the era when Puccini and Strauss were composing, with arias and duets and quartets. But the pacing is uneven, coming nearly to a standstill in the first act.
Set in Paris on Bastille Day in 1970, the opera is about fictional soprano Regine Saint Laurent, who retired suddenly six years earlier at the height of her profession. Much like the Marschallin in Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier," she must face her own aging, a turn inward set off by the visit of Andre Le Tourner, a journalist who is as much an admirer as he is a reporter.
She is surrounded by momentos of her last triumph in "Alienor d'Aquitaine," and she intends to return to the stage in that role. But Le Tourner forces her to confront the jarring events in her final performance that caused her to quit singing. Introspection convinces her that not only is her voice broken, but her spirit is too.
Originally part of a joint program of the Met and Lincoln Center Theater to develop new works, "Prima Donna" was dropped by those companies because Wainwright and Bernadette Colomine composed the libretto in French, not English. It premiered at the Manchester International Festival in July 2009, then traveled to North America for Toronto's Luminato festival the following June.
The son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Wainwright is a self-described opera junkie, and the composition is an homage that shows influences from several 19th- and 20th-century composers such as Puccini, Strauss and Britten. The harp and timpani are used in many pretty passages. The most effective number, an aria by the maid Marie entitled "Picardie," is at the start of the second act when she sings of the differences between Paris and her home. It is more concise than any of the music given to Regine.
In a role reminiscent of Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard," soprano Melody Moore took over as Regine from Janis Kelly, who sang in the premiere and was announced for this run in December 2010.
Somewhat restrained and not nearly as mannered as some real-life divas, Moore needed to be more over the top in her affectations to befit a faded star of stature. Wainwright gave her soaring vocal lines, and she filled them with color, although some turned strident toward the top. She gets two arias, "Quand j'etais jeune etudiant (When I was a young student)" and "Feux d'Artifice (Fireworks)," which is sung while looking out at the Bastille Day celebration and seems anticlimactic.
Taylor Stayton gave a bright tenor to Andre, who makes no effort to hide his fawning over Regine. Coloratura Kathryn Guthrie Demos was a perky Marie, who comes off as the one sane person in the apartment, and her voice lent a spark that cut through the sometimes syrupy score. Randal Turner, as the officious manservant Phillipe, provided a sturdy baritone.
Conductor Jayce Orgren led the City Opera orchestra, which produced a luminous sound. Antony McDonald's set was a huge room in a Paris apartment that had seen its better days ? Regine has been forced to sell her Picasso. Tim Albery directed in place of Daniel Kramer, who staged the original. Thomas C. Hase's lighting in the opening and closing scenes was memorable.
Wainwright, wearing a tailcoat with shiny silver chain and knit black hat, received a loud ovation during the curtain calls from the filled house, many of whom bought $25 tickets that had been subsidized by a foundation. At its world premiere, he had dressed as Verdi.
Those attending may want to study up: The program devotes all of 56 words to describing the opera.
There are additional performances at BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Who goes there? Verifying identity online
ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? We are all used to logging into networks where we have a unique identity, verified by the network server and associated with our account for other members of the network to see. Such an identity-based network system is useful because it is relatively simple. However, there are three major drawbacks including loss of anonymity of communicating users, misplaced trust and identity theft.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have devised a new type of network that allows users to be authenticated without relying on unique identities.
Writing in the International Journal of Security and Networks, Mohamed Gouda and colleagues asked themselves how they might get around these three problem areas of conventional networks. How can one design a network without user identities and what does it mean for a user to authenticate another in such a network? They suggest that rather than each user having an identity, a network based on an addressing system associated with an unlimited, user-selected list of pseudonyms can circumvent all the problems of loss of anonymity, identity theft and misplaced trust. The network authority server is then the only party, other than each user that knows their address and which of their pool of pseudonyms is associated with the address at any given time.
"The problem of anonymous communication over a network is an old and respected problem, and has inspired a considerable amount of research," the researchers explain. Papers dating back to at least 1981 have attempted to address this issue. Anonymized email based on encryption and the layered connection approach of the Tor protocol, and Onion routing, have been used successfully over the last couple of decades. However, all of these approaches have scaling problems that limit the number of concurrent users without huge investment in network servers to carry the requisite data traffic.
The researchers explain that in their novel network structure users do not have identities. Users are contacted by searching for their pseudonyms, which they change frequently. Authentication is done by the users themselves, not by the certification of a central authority. In this network, as there is no identity, there is no identity theft. "We suggest that this may be a whole new kind of network, distinct from both traditional client-server and reputation-based peer-to-peer networks," the team says.

Your specialness in God's eyes
A Christian Science perspective.
?God loves the rest of us so much that He gave us you.?
Skip to next paragraphThis thought came to me one day while I was praying for myself about a problem I was having. It wasn?t a big problem, but this thought was so reassuring and healing that I don?t even recall now what the problem was.
Then just a short while afterward, I had occasion to share that thought with a friend. This friend had been telling me some discouraging news that had him feeling pretty low, and as I was listening to him, I was praying that he be more aware of how special he is as God?s child.
And that?s when I knew it was time to share that God-inspired message with him.
Since that day, I?ve thought about it, noticing how its truth is shown to me. For example, when our son graduated from college, he directed an after-school program at a middle school. The children came from economically and socially diverse families; some were from single-parent homes, or even no-parent homes, where they lived with relatives or guardians assigned by the court. He taught the children social skills and good study habits, while also taking them to restaurants, museums, and workshops for teens.
One day he was speaking to his class about sports and how participating in them helps develop discipline, respect for others, and character. One young man had an interest in wrestling but was reluctant to seriously look into it, thinking that he lacked the ability to compete. He asked our son what he thought about it. Since my son had wrestled in high school, he encouraged the student to give wrestling a try.
Four years later, long after my son had left that job, he was having a tough time after a relationship ended unexpectedly. And just at his lowest point, a glimmer of encouragement peeked through the clouds. A friend called to tell him that the local newspaper had run an article that day about a high school wrestler who had just been given an award for excellence. It was the same young man whom he had mentored four years earlier. The student credited our son for inspiring his interest and success.
This moved me. Right when my son was feeling so unappreciated, he was made aware that he was actually greatly appreciated. At the very moment that he needed it most, he received a message just for him, to assure him that he is truly very special.
My study of Christian Science has illumined this experience. I?ve found that while studying the Bible and ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? by Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, that I?ve not always clearly understood them. But if I?m alert, something I?m dealing with will make a passage from those books more meaningful and relevant. For example, this quotation became clearer to me through my son?s experience: ?Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth? (p. 266).
Life presents continual opportunities to witness the effects of ?spiritual Love.? There are times, however, when these opportunities may appear harsh, and we may not recognize them as an ?hour of development? as Mrs. Eddy described them. Yet, right there in the midst of the trial, God?s loving grace is gently leading and assuring us of our innate specialness, just as it always is.
Looking at our life through a spiritual lens, when we face discouragement and depression, we have divine authority to know right then that God is present with blessings. Right where we are, is God, is Love ? perfectly expressed as us. All of us, in every part, through every pore of our being, are brilliantly shining the unfailing light of Love.
No mist of discouragement, depression, or victimization is greater than God?s love to manifest Himself through us, through our every action, by our every thought.
Mrs. Eddy provided this encouragement: ?Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance? (?The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany,? pp. 149-150).
Look at it this way. We may as well see ourselves as special. God does!
The God of love and peace shall be with you.
