Who is the next automotive superpower?

Who is the next automotive superpower? The U.S., Germany, Japan, Korea. We know which countries have already become the big players in the auto industry. But who's up next? The next decade will see dramatic shifts in automaking dominance. Who is the next automotive superpower?

Yes, China. No surprise here, considering the country has some major success-factors in its favor: Technology-sharing partnerships with global carmakers; a foothold in global brand ownership (Volvo); a massive industrial base; an increasingly highly educated populace; engineers who can reverse-engineer a Mercedes in a day-and-a-half; a vast, global transportation network, and a widening pool of domestic car buyers. The question has long past if, and now we're just waiting for when. Five years, tops. Yeah, we took the easy one. But who's next? (Photo: AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko.)
