Ox Bow Lake Formation, As Seen By the Google Earth Time Machine

djl4570 writes with a link to this "excellent study in the gradual change of geographic features as a river meander becomes an ox bow lake when the river current cuts through the meander. The same Google Earth feature can be used to view changes in urban and suburban geography. The historical data is a work in progress. The region I looked at only has images going back to 1993. Other regions will have a different mix and depth of data."

Gigantic iceberg breaks away from glacier in north Greenland (+video)

An iceberg twice the size of Manhattan has broken off from a north Greenland's glacier, raising concerns of global warming.?

For several years, scientists had been watching a long crack near the tip of the northerly Petermann Glacier. On Monday, NASA satellites showed it had broken completely, freeing an iceberg measuring 46 square miles.

A massive ice sheet covers about four-fifths of Greenland. Petermann Glacier is mostly on land, but a segment sticks out over water like a frozen tongue, and that's where the break occurred.

The same glacier spawned an iceberg twice that size two years ago. Together, the breaks made a large change that's got the attention of researchers.

"It's dramatic. It's disturbing," said University of Delaware professor Andreas Muenchow, who was one of the first researchers to notice the break. "We have data for 150 years and we see changes that we have not seen before."

"It's one of the manifestations that Greenland is changing very fast," he said.

Researchers suspect global warming is to blame, but can't prove it conclusively yet. Glaciers do calve icebergs naturally, but what's happened in the last three years to Petermann is unprecedented, Muenchow and other scientists say.

"This is not part of natural variations anymore," said NASA glaciologist Eric Rignot, who camped on Petermann 10 years ago.

Ohio State University ice scientist Ian Howat said there is still a chance it could be normal calving, like losing a fingernail that has grown too long, but any further loss would show it's not natural: "We're still in the phase of scratching our heads and figuring out how big a deal this really is."

Many of Greenland's southern glaciers have been melting at an unusually rapid pace. The Petermann break brings large ice loss much farther north than in the past, said Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.

If it continues, and more of the Petermann is lost, the melting would push up sea levels, he said. The ice lost so far was already floating, so the breaks don't add to global sea levels.

Northern Greenland and Canada have been warming five times faster than the average global temperature, Muenchow said. Temperatures have increased there by about 4 degrees Fahrenheit in the last 30 years, Scambos said.

The new iceberg is likely to follow the path of the one in 2010, Muenchow said. That broke apart into smaller icebergs headed north, then west and last year started landing in Newfoundland, he said.

It's more than glaciers in Greenland that are melting. Scientists also reported this week that the Arctic had the largest sea ice loss on record for June.

Zaarly Just Made It Made Easier For People To ... - Business Insider

The people who brought you Zaarly, an online marketplace that helps users find local providers of services and products, just announced?Zaarly Anywhere, which takes its marketplace and spreads it across the Web.

The main goal of Zaarly Anywhere is to allow partners?website publishers and app developers?to monetize content, while also providing an easy way for readers to purchase a product or service that inspires them locally.?

The new model is a natural extension of what the original Zaarly offered. Love that gorgeous treehouse picture on The Fancy? Hit the Zaarly button next to the photo and find someone local who can build it for you.?

Besides making it easier for users to turn their online aspirations into a real offline experience, Zaarly Anywhere is giving partner sites a share of the 10% cut Zaarly receives from every transaction.

Zaarly founder Bo Fishbank said he's hoping to sign up "sites that have great communities that are passionate about one thing or another or groups of people that have a skill or are showing off online but don?t have a way to go and monetize that skill or to make money doing what they love."?

Zaarly is currently collaborating with?Cookstr, Everyday Health, IKEA Hackers, Remodelaholic, The Fancy, The Los Angeles Times, and Simplified Building. The company said it has another seven partners lined up to launch soon.

"By partnering up with these sites, we have allowed them to take their really amazing online content, as well as the communities of people, who both produce and consume that product and turn it into offline transactions that actually happen and get people the things they are looking for," Fishbank said.

The company has raised $15.1 million?a $1 million seed round and a subsequent $14.1 million round from Kleiner Perkins and others. HP CEO Meg Whitman, the former CEO of eBay, is on Zaarly's board.

Fifth moon discovery reminds us how little we know about Pluto (+video)

Orbiting at outskirts of the solar system some three billion miles from Earth, Pluto remains shrouded in mystery.?

By Natalie Wolchover,?Life's Little Mysteries / July 16, 2012

This image, taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, shows five moons orbiting the distant, icy dwarf planet Pluto. The green circle marks the newly discovered moon, designated P5, as photographed by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 on July 7, 2012.

A fifth moon orbiting the dwarf planet Pluto has turned up in new Hubble Space Telescope images. ?Planetary scientists say the newfound moon serves as yet another reminder of how little we really know about this remote, chaotic world.

"We're not finished searching yet," said Hal Weaver of Johns Hopkins University, who thinks there may be more.

"Every time we look harder, we find new stuff," said Alan Stern, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., and a member of the moon's discovery team. In recent decades, he and his colleagues have identified signs of an atmosphere on the?dwarf planet, as well as polar caps, a high albedo (highly reflective surface), and of course, a growing collection of moons.

But in-depth investigation of?Pluto?has proven tremendously difficult from 3 billion miles away. The best images we have of the icy world come from the Hubble Telescope, but to the untrained eye, they're not much to behold. At a slim 1,429 miles wide ? roughly the distance from Maine to the tip of Florida ? Pluto will likely remain a dim blur until NASA's New Horizons spacecraft arrives there in July 2015.

What secrets might lie in wait??[The Greatest Mysteries of the Planets]

For one thing, the dwarf planet could possess a set of everyone's favorite cosmic accessories. "It's a very distinct possibility and the theoretical arguments are very strong that Pluto has rings that come and go with time," Stern told Life's Little Mysteries.

Space rocks and other debris litter the?Kuiper belt, where Pluto resides, and they probably pepper the icy world and its moons. "The moons are being hit all the time, and the ejecta [collision debris] escapes, making a ring," Stern said. "And then radiation and gravity depletes the ring through erosion."

Computer models of this cycle suggest that all the dwarf planet's rings sometimes get eroded before a new one forms. "When you model that on a computer there is randomness to [the spacing of the collision events], and so the rings come and go according to these models," he said.

Beneath those fleeting rings, and beneath Pluto's thin, nitrogen-rich atmosphere, it's anyone's guess how the surface will appear when viewed up close. In Hubble images, the dwarf planet's mottled fa?ade varies between extremes of charcoal black, dark orange and white. What materials compose these assorted regions? And do they give rise to cold-liquid-spewing cryovolcanoes or geysers? The surface's geochemistry might even hint at a giant underground ocean. [The True Stories of 5 Mystery Planets]

More data is also needed to clarify how Pluto wound up in its frigid Kuiper belt domain. Astronomers think it and its neighbors formed from the same disk of material around the sun that coalesced into the other major bodies in the solar system. But at some point early on, a planetary collision probably sent Pluto ricocheting far beyond the rest, forever to carry the mark of this fateful encounter in the form of its strange, oval path around the sun, which lies off the plane of the other planetary orbits.

Considering all the mysteries that remain,?Pluto's newfound moon?almost definitely won't be the last of its surprises. "When New Horizons gets there, I think it's going to knock our socks off," Stern said. "It's going to be a whole new world."

Twitter reply's original creator uncovered, did it before it was cool

The @ reply has long been cited as an example of Twitter's organic growth, having birthed from its users rather than a San Francisco office -- but who really started it? After some in-depth sleuthing, early adopter Garrett Murray now credits the ad hoc invention to Robert Andersen, who gave kudos to an especially dedicated (and injured) compatriot on November 2, 2006. The origin day most accept as part of the common legend, November 23rd that same year, was more of a happy accident where Murray and others decided to use the now famous shift-2 keypress to clear up their conversation paths. When you see the @ reply front and center in modern Twitter apps, then, raise a glass to Andersen's unintentionally avant garde microblogging.

Bosnians to bury 520 Srebrenica genocide victims

On the 17th anniversary of Europe's worst massacre since World War II, Muslims in Bosnia are heading to Srebrenica to attend a funeral for 520 newly identified victims.

The remains of those Muslim men and boys slaughtered at Srebrenica around July 11, 1995, will be laid to rest Wednesday in the town whose name is now synonymous with genocide. The coffins are already at the memorial center and the burial pits have been dug.

Ambulances were also standing ready to help those among the tens of thousands for whom the event will be too much to handle.

Rabija Hrustanovic found the remains of her husband and brother among the sea of simple green coffins waiting to be buried.

"I want to lay down next to them and stay here forever," she said before breaking into tears.

Srebrenica: The story that will never end

Srebrenica was a U.N.-protected Muslim town in Bosnia besieged by Serb forces throughout Bosnia's 1992-95 war. Serb troops led by Gen. Ratko Mladic overran the enclave in July 1995, separated men from women and executed 8,000 men and boys within just a few days. Dutch troops stationed in Srebrenica as U.N. peacekeepers were undermanned and outgunned, and failed to intervene.

The bodies of the victims are still being found in mass graves throughout eastern Bosnia. The task has been made even more difficult by the fact that the perpetrators dug up mass graves and reburied remains in other mass graves to try to cover their tracks. The victims have been identified through DNA analysis and newly identified ones are buried at the Srebrenica memorial center every year.

So far, over 5,000 Srebrenica victims found this way have been laid to rest.

Mladic still a hero
Mladic was arrested last year in Serbia and is on trial now at the tribunal in The Hague. He faces 11 charges, including genocide, for allegedly masterminding Serb atrocities throughout the war that left 100,000 dead, especially the Srebrenica massacre. He denies wrongdoing.

But despite the charges, to many Serbs Mladic remains a national hero.

Horrors of Srebrenica massacre set out at Mladic trial

"Serbs believe he is an honorable and fair man," said Bosnian Serb Novica Kapuran from the town of Pale, near Sarajevo. "He is being blamed for something he has not done."

That attitude angers Muslim Bosniaks.

But Holocaust survivor Rabbi Arthur Schneier of the Park East Synagogue in New York, who came to attend the funeral in solidarity with the victim's families, told The Associated Press that Bosnian witnesses should simply continue testifying and keeping a record.

Schneier said he knows from dealing with Holocaust deniers that "to the advocates of a revisionist history, you cannot even present the facts, because they will not accept them."

The rabbi urged the world to stand up in the face of injustice, "hear the cry of the oppressed and to respond. "

Photos: The charges against Ratko Mladic (on this page)

"Silence on the part of the international community ... only strengthens the perpetrators," he said.

In Washington, President Barack Obama issued a statement honoring the memory of the "8,000 innocent men and boys" who were massacred in Srebrenica 17 years ago.

"The name Srebrenica will forever be associated with some of the darkest acts of the 20th century," Obama said.

Obama said the U.S. "rejects efforts to distort the scope of this atrocity, rationalize the motivations behind it, blame the victims, and deny the indisputable fact that it was genocide."

Jackson's been on medical leave for a month, but his location and exact ailment haven't been disclosed. Initially, staff said he was being treated for exhaustion. But last week they said his condition was worse than previously thought and required inpatient treatment. They also disclosed Jackson has been battling emotional problems. CHICAGO (AP) ? U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s disclosure that he is suffering from a "mood disorder" still leaves many questions about his secretive medical leave and whether the the son of the prominent civil rights leader has satisfied mounting calls to be more open about his monthlong absence.

Just hours after Democratic leaders in Congress ratcheted up pressure on Jackson to reveal more information, his office released a brief statement from his doctor on Wednesday saying the Chicago Democrat was receiving "intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for a mood disorder."

But it offered no details about Jackson's whereabouts or even the name of the doctor, citing federal privacy laws.

Several experts said that based on the doctor's use of the term "mood disorder," they believed Jackson might be suffering from depression. But the statement did not elaborate on his condition and rejected claims that the 47-year-old congressman was being treated for "alcohol or substance abuse."

When Jackson's medical leave was first announced ? two weeks after it began on June 10 ? his office said he was being treated for exhaustion. Last week his staff said his condition was worse than previously thought and required inpatient treatment, saying Jackson had been privately battling emotional problems. The office has remained mum on details.

The timing of the leave has invited scrutiny, coming as Jackson faces an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Days before Jackson's office announced his leave, a fundraiser and family friend also involved in the probe was arrested and charged with unrelated medical fraud charges.

IndoorAtlas uses disturbances in the (geomagnetic) force to map interiors, plot a path to aisle 3 (video)

IndoorAtlas uses disturbances in the geomagnetic force to map interiors, keep us on track in aisle 3 video

Interior navigation is only just coming into its own, but IndoorAtlas has developed a technology that could make it just as natural as breathing -- or at least, firing up a smartphone's mapping software. Developed by a team at Finland's University of Oulu, the method relies on identifying the unique geomagnetic field of every location on Earth to get positioning through a mobile device. It's not just accurate, to less than 6.6 feet, but can work without help from wireless signals and at depths that would scare off mere mortal technologies: IndoorAtlas has already conducted tests in a mine 4,593 feet deep. Geomagnetic location-finding is already available through an Android API, with hints of more platforms in the future. It will still need some tender loving care from app developers before we're using our smartphones to navigate through the grocery store as well as IndoorAtlas does in a video after the break.
