Northwest Whitfield softball offense rolling ? Sports ? The Daily ...

Northwest Whitfield was the better softball team in six of seven innings.

It was enough to keep the Lady Bruins on their early season roll.

Thanks to 10 runs in the first four innings and strong work from senior pitcher Emily Boyd, Northwest won 13-5 in a Region 7-4A matchup Tuesday night at Dalton.

Northwest lost its first game of the season over the weekend, but has won three games since then by a combined score of 30-6.

Boyd ? the Lady Bruins? ace has committed to Ole Miss ? went four innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. She got a good bit of help from her offense, with three runs coming in the first inning, another in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth. Northwest (12-1, 2-0) finished with 20 hits.

?We?ve been preaching staying back and going opposite field,? said Northwest coach Jason Brooker, who?s in his first season leading the program. ?I don?t know how many hits we had to center field and right field, but I bet it was more than half.?

Leading Northwest was first baseman Mallory Souther, who finished a home run shy of the cycle. She went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, with three off a bases-loaded triple in the seventh. She scored in the second inning on Hannah Godfrey?s single.

?I was keeping my eye on the ball,? she said, noting it has been an issue in recent games. ?Yeah, that and pulling my head out.?

Lady Bruins shortstop Ashley Conner finished 3-for-4 with a two-RBI double coming in the first inning to start the scoring. She later scored on a groundout by third baseman MyKeah Johnson, who finished 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. With the score 4-0 in the third, Macy Weeks and Souther each had RBI singles. In the fourth, Karlie Henson had a two-RBI double, and Gabbi Helton followed with another of the same.

Heading into the fifth, the Lady Catamounts (2-3, 0-2) had their backs against the eight-run mercy rule but got the bats going. Boyd exited after the fourth and Brileigh Baggett came in for relief. Dalton scored five runs in the inning to cut the deficit in half, with two coming off a double by Carson Hagin. Blayne Thomason and Jessica Cisneros had back-to-back RBI singles followed by Hannah Jones being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Lady Bruins made two errors in the inning, which Brooker thinks is evidence his team was looking toward the end of the game instead of focusing.

?Brileigh has been pitching well all year for us,? he said. ?I think we just got caught looking at the scoreboard.?

Baggett settled down, though, and only allowed one more hit through the sixth and seventh innings. None of the runs she allowed were earned.

Lady Cats coach Jeff McKinney was happy his team did not quit, even down 10 runs.

?They could?ve laid down, but they kept battling,? he said. ?I?m proud of them for that.?

McKinney thinks the result came down to not getting the big hits early on.

?We had two runners on in the first inning and two runners on in the second inning,? he said. ?We just couldn?t get anything through. Emily did a good job for them. In the fifth inning, we got more relaxed at the plate and put some pressure on them.?

Hagin started on the mound for Dalton, pitched five innings and allowed 10 runs off 14 hits. Allie Blackwood pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs off five hits. Thomason finished with three hits, all singles, for the Lady Cats.

'They were screaming away': Louisiana man recounts Isaac rescue

MSNBC's Tamron Hall speaks with Jesse Shaffer, who is working with others to rescue people trapped by floods in their Louisiana homes.

By Sevil Omer and Isolde Raftery , NBC News

Updated at 6:57 p.m. ET: A Louisiana father-and-son team is being credited with rescuing dozens of people in the low-lying Plaquemines Parish on Wednesday as Isaac made its way inland from the Gulf of Mexico.

?There was a family of five on a trailer with about one foot left before they were to go under, and they were screaming away,? Jesse Shaffer Jr. of Braithwaite?told MSNBC's Tamron Hall.

?I?ve seen about 60 rescues today and that?s including about 30 animals,? he said.

Across the Gulf Coast, residents abandoned their homes, with some heading to evacuation centers to ride out the storm. Others weren't as fortunate. The cyclone, downgraded to a tropical storm Wednesday afternoon, threatened to flood towns in Louisiana and Mississippi with more rain and storm surges.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said about 2,000 residents were ordered to evacuate, but only half left before Isaac made landfall late Tuesday. At least 118 people were rescued in Plaquemines, including 25 trapped on their roofs, authorities said.

Shaffer was among a tireless crew to save several residents in the east bank,?Nungesser told The Times-Picayune in New Orleans.

Levees in the east bank are just over 8 feet high, while storm surges have been estimated as high as 14 feet.?The Mississippi River cuts the parish in two as it flows to the Gulf of Mexico. One rescue included a woman and her 5-month-old baby, both plucked from a rooftop, Nungesser said.

Shaffer, 25, his 53-year-old father, Jesse Shaffer Sr., and two other men headed out on boats to reach residents trapped or stranded by the rising water, The Times-Picayune reported.

?I was watching the water all day yesterday and then we got the surge around 1 and 1:30 last night,? the younger Shaffer told MSNBC. He launched his boat from a service road and headed into this submerged community before dawn.

Joshua Brockhaus, an electrician who lives in the flooded area between New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico, also helped rescue neighbors in his boat. "I'm getting text messages from all over asking for help," Brockhaus told the AP. ?"I'm dropping my dogs off, and I'm going back out there."

?Not used to evacuating?
In Houma, La., Doug Bourg was busy making sure families streaming into the Houma Municipal Auditorium, the official evacuation center for Terrebonne Parish, had the latest information on Isaac.

?At the moment, we have 194 people here at the center,? Bourg told NBC News. Bourg, an administrative assistant to the Terrebonne Parish president, said each family was advised to bring enough food for at least 72 hours.

Dominica Knight, a 23-year-old mother of two, spent the evening at the center.

"I have kids and they both have asthma," she told The Associated Press, as she held her 11-month-old baby in one arm while holding onto her 2-year-old with her free hand. She said she didn't want to be without electricity or away from emergency assistance with Isaac near.

?I'm not used to evacuating," she told the AP.

Sandbagging efforts
Faced with pelting rain, winds and rising water, Lafitte Mayor Tim Kerner led a sandbagging effort in his community to build a last-minute extra line of defense, he told the Times-Picayune.?Members of the National Guard were expected to?assist in the effort.

At the zoo, remembering Katrina
Seven years ago, when Hurricane Katrina bore down on New Orleans, former Audubon Zoo worker Dan Maloney was sleeping next to the reptile house, First Coast News reported. Creepy perhaps, but it was the highest ground in the zoo.

He and a staff of 15 zookeepers ended up living at the zoo for two months, caring for the animals even as food supplies dwindled. Ultimately, he is proud of saying, only four animals died. Two were otters, the BBC reported at the time; an alligator also escaped, although at the time Maloney was confident the alligator would return.

As Hurricane Isaac ripped through the city on the seventh anniversary of Katrina, Maloney, who now works at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens in Mississippi, hoped for the best and recalled, with some fondness, earlier efforts. The zoo employees organized armed patrols, First Coast News reported, and built their own shower.

"The animals can't go so we have to stay,? Maloney told First Coast News. ?That's how it works. That's the job we signed up to do and that was our mission to make sure they came through it okay.?

Abuzz in Isaac?s wake
Hurricane Isaac held Floridian Ismay Williams captive in her own home ? not because of flooding or power outages but because it moved a small colony of bees into her home.

"I have intimidating problems with them. I'm scared they will sting you," Williams told NBC-2 in southwest Florida. "I wouldn't want 60,000 bees to get angry with me."

And so Keith Councell, a homegrown bee keeper from the area, checked out her home. He sealed a hole the bees were using as an entryway, making sure they could only exit.

In Cape Coral, Fla., Richard Chapelle found 10,000 honeybees lounging on the grass in his backyard, brought there, apparently, by wind and rain from the storm.

Advertising for Small Business: Do Print Ads Still Make Sense?

When it comes to small businesses, does print advertising still make sense? The short answer, of course, is yes: print advertising still makes sense for plenty of small businesses. The question you need to ask is this: do print ads still make sense for your business. That answer isn?t so obvious because, like so many things in marketing, the answer depends on a variety of factors. Which brings us to the purpose of this post?let?s talk about those factors and how they might influence your decision.

1. What are your expectations? First, it?s important to be clear about your expectations going in so that you have a way to measure success and evaluate the print campaign?s effectiveness. Second, it?s important to state your expectations and share them with some others (e.g. a board of directors, a marketing person, people in your networking group) so you can get a sense if your expectations are realistic.

2. Have you had success with print advertising before? How recent? This might be an obvious consideration, but it?s easy to wax nostalgic about past advertising attempts and think they were more effective than they actually were. Do you have metrics you can review? How many leads came in (that you know of) from your print ads? How many of those leads converted into customers? How recent was your print campaign? If your print campaign circa 1998 was extremely effective, don?t expect the same thing to necessarily happen in 2012. Remember, Google, Facebook, Twitter, smart phones, and tablets didn?t exist then (in other words, the number of distractions has increased dramatically).

3. Will your audience see ?em? Again, an obvious point, but it?s worth stating here because the best print advertising ?deal? in the world won?t make any difference if your audience doesn?t see the ads. All publications have media kits. You can often download these directly from the publication?s website (look for ?Advertising? in the footer links or ?About? section). If it?s not available on the site, ask your sales rep to email it to you. The media kit contains a wealth of information, including demographic info like gender breakdown, household income, education levels, etc. In other words, it will provide a good snapshot of who reads the publication. If you?re selling spa services, you won?t want to run print ads in a hunting magazine (an extreme example, but you get the idea).

4. Are you ready to negotiate? The good news about print advertising is this: today, you?re in the driver?s seat. Print publications have gone through a transformation over the last decade, and some of have survived better than others. Big businessesthat used to spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on print ads every year have taken a good chunk of that money online. This, obviously, has hurt print pubs (specifically newspapers; read this report about how newspapers lose $10 in print for every digital $1). What this means for you is the price you?re quoted isn?t always the final price. There?s room for negotiation on cost, but also added-value items like ad space on the website, banner ads on newsletters, or a longer flight in the print pub itself. Don?t be afraid to speak up, ask questions, and?as we?ve all been counseled to do when buying a new car?walk away if you?re not satisfied with the ad package. More than likely you can land a deal that really is a deal.

5. What?s the publication?s ?shelf life?? Advertising in anything with the word? ?guide,? ?annual,? or ?specialty issue? in the title can be worthwhile simply because of the publication?s shelf life, meaning it?s not necessarily something that will be read and then tossed. People might keep it on hand and come back to it time and time again until the next annual issue is released. For example, a publication?s annual wedding issue might be worth advertising in if you?re a wedding photographer, limo company, or florist (but be prepared?these sorts of issues also command higher prices). The media kit we mentioned in the point above will often indicate specialty issues and their themes.

6. How will you measure results? This is critical. There?s no sense in running print ads (or doing any sort of other marketing/advertising program) if you don?t have a way to measure results. (Relying on gut instinct isn?t an effective way, either.) You needn?t have complicated processes for measuring results. Focus on the action you want people to take when they see your ad (yes, your ad should have a call to action). Do you want them to call and mention the ad? Great. You might think that?s enough and you?ll simply record who mentions the ad. But what about the people who forget? Or what if you?re running an ad in multiple publications? How will you know which ad is bringing in results? Instead, get a dedicated phone number or extension, one that?s used only for one ad. Or if you want people to take action on your website, create a specific landing page around the ad?s offer. You?ll be able to measure the number of visits and, if there?s a form to fill out, how many of those visitors convert into leads (free analytics software like Google Analytics is something we recommend all business owners install on their websites).

7. How important is added exposure and branding to your business? Print advertising can be an effective way to reach more people and brand your core messages or tagline. The rule of thumb used to be that someone needed to see your message seven times before it began to compute/register in the person?s head. This number has no doubt gone up thanks to the increased number of channels vying for people?s attention: the Internet, social media, cable channels, smart phones, etc. If you?re looking to solidify your brand, a print campaign can help, but keep in mind that branding is a harder thing to measure.

8. Is your business equipped for a hi-tech print ad? QR (quick response) codes can be the way to bridge the more traditional print ad with something hi-tech. A QR code is something people scan with their smart phones and then they?re brought to a special landing page, video, or something else that further expands on the print ad?s content. Peruse almost any national publication, and you?ll see examples. Scan them with your own phone to check them out. The jury is still out on how effective QR codes are, but according to ScanLife, ?QR code scans increased 300% in 2011 compared to 2010.? Remember, your mileage may vary. The key is to make the QR code?s landing page/content truly remarkable. This isn?t always easy to pull off.

9. What other marketing and advertising do you have in place? There?s rarely a good reason to have all your eggs in one marketing/advertising basket. Your marketing budget should include a solid mix of programs, including those that you know for a fact work, some that you?re still measuring, and others that you might consider ?wild cards.? Obviously, the biggest chunk of your budget will be geared towards the stuff that works. And yes, it?s possible some of those ?still measuring? and wild card programs might eventually work their way onto that list. Determine which bucket print ads fall in for your business and plan your spending accordingly.

Remember, when making a decision about any sort of marketing or advertising program?be it print ads, online ads, radio ads, social media, you name it?you need to determine whether it works for your business.

How about you? Do you still run print ads? Why or why not? Do you have any other things people should consider when evaluating whether print ads are right for their business? Share in the comments.

Windows XP, the successor to Windows 2000 and Windows Me, was the first consumer-oriented operating system produced by Microsoft to be built on the Windows NT kernel. How Do You Guide A Child To Move On From Pet Loss Grief? ? Self ...

When parents decide to have a pet at home, it is a decision that they usually make for the happiness of their children. For many kids, pets are not just playmates. Rather they are creatures that can make them happy, teach them how to be responsible, relieve them of daily pressures and overall serve as their good friends. Considering this, it is safe to assume that during the entire stay of a pet in any household, most of the hours are spent with children. Hence, children are likely to experience pet loss grief with the death of a pet. As a parent, it might be hard to think how you can help your kids move on from the loss. This is because you, yourself, are finding it hard to cope up. But since you are the adult, you have to take it upon yourself to give your kids some extra help.

Parents have to remember that patience is very important. Children have the tendency to bring up the topic repeatedly so be patient. Other than this, you should allow your children to work through their grief. Let them express their grief openly and let them see you express your grief as well. Always make sure that when you talk about what happened, you do it with all honesty. Also similar to what Christian counseling experts would tell you, talk about death and grief in terms children understand. Don?t use words like God took the pet or the pet is just asleep. These might lead them to develop fears such as the fear of God taking them or their loved ones away and fear of sleeping. It is also recommended to involve your children to activities pertaining to the loss. Give them permission to participate in the burial service. Allow them to have a say on how the memorial service should be carried out. If ever a child says he doesn?t want to join, don?t force him to.

Also, you should not forget that part of helping your kid cope up with the loss is to teach him that death is permanent. Further, don?t commit the mistake of immediately getting another pet to replace the lost one. This will trigger feelings of disloyalty and will also give the wrong impression that grief for a loss can be overcome by mere buying of a replacement. Pet loss grief counseling for children may not be as serious as substance abuse counseling but it needs attention just the same. Exerting effort in learning the best practices to help your kids cope up can go a long way in your kids? recovery. As always, be patient and never forget to hug and reassure your kids.

Four Steps to an Effective Small Business Marketing Strategy ...

You know you have a great product or service. You have the best sales personal to help your customers make an educated buying decision. You have the best customer support set up to help your customers with any questions they have after the sale, but what are you doing to market your product or service. Nothing really happens in your business to make money before you set up and implement your small business marketing strategy.

Small Business Marketing Tip Number one

The first part of your marketing strategy should be to know your customer. Take time to think about why someone would want your product or service. You need to know what motivates your potential customers so that you can position your product or service correctly.

Small Business Marketing Tip Number Two

The second part to your small business marketing strategy is to stay consistent in your message and communication. You're current customers and repeat customers are the most valuable customers that you have. They have already done business with you and you have had the chance to develop a relationship with them. Make sure to stay in contact with them and let them know you appreciate their business and also let them know when you have specials or new products they may like. Some tools you could use in your small business marketing strategy to stay in contact are email, text messaging, mailers, social networking messages and posts, updates on a blog or your website and so many more. Make sure you are gathering contact information from your customers and make them feel important because they are.

Small Business Marketing Tip Number Three

The third part of your business marketing strategy should be to use the media as much as possible and make some noise about your product or service. Get your business covered in as many news, radio, Internet publications as you can to establish yourself as an expert or an authority. News stations and local print media are constantly looking for good stories to be part of and talk about. Make sure that you present your business to them with the audience in mind on not necessarily to promote your business. The sneaky part of your small business marketing strategy is to let them get the word out by delivering a real cool story they can report on.

Small Business Marketing Tip Number Four

The fourth part of your marketing strategy is to make sure that your customers can find you. In the fast paced work we live in today people are using technology more and more to make their buying decisions. This includes the whole buying cycle from research to purchase for products and searching on mobile devises for local businesses. Statistically one-third of mobile searches are with local intent meaning people want to purchase now. This means that if your business does not show up their mobile device either through search or local listings, they are probably going to do business with your competition.

Your marketing strategy should be all about developing a relationship with your customer's, this is starts with your message and should continue long after the sale. With all of the options technology offers getting news customers and staying in contact with them has become very cost-effective, so make sure to plan out your small business marketing strategy.

The next thing you should do is to plan out your local marketing strategy using some of the tips in this article. Make sure that you are using technology like social media and mobile to stay in contact with your customers. If you need any assistance get in touch with us and see if we can help with your small business marketing strategy.

Neighbors said they are stunned to learn why police were surrounding the house.

2012 NFLX Betting Preview ? Indianapolis Colts at Washington Redskins

By Jack Williams ? Aug 24th, 2012 ? Category: NFL

The week 3 preseason matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field in Washington D.C. will be one of the marquee preseason games this week as rookie quarterbacks Andrea Luck and Robert Griffin III square off. NFL Fans will be interested to see how the first two picks in this year?s NFL draft matchup against each other, even if it is just the preseason.

Last week against the Chicago Bears, Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins offense had a bit of trouble getting into any rhythm and moving the ball. RGIII was just 5 of 8 passing for only 49 yards in the first half. One reason why Griffin may have struggled so much against Chicago is the fact that he was sacked three times during the first two quarters and fumbled the ball once. Those sacks did not allow the rookie QB to get into the flow of the game and find his receivers down field.

While the offense was struggling against the Bears, the defense for the Redskins was not doing much better. Jay Cutler threw for 122 yards on 7 for 13 passing and wide receiver Brandon Marshall was able to make a few big plays downfield. The Redskins will have a chance to get their defense back on track this weekend when they face the Colts.

As was to be expected, Andrew Luck and the Colts offense were not as crisp against the Pittsburgh Steelers as they were a week before against the St. Louis Rams. Luck had one pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown in the first quarter. While a team never likes it when a pass is intercepted for a touchdown, the Indianapolis Colts were happy with the way Luck responded to the situation. The rookie signal caller showed good mental toughness in bouncing back to lead to team to a halftime lead.

What to Watch For

This week?s game for both teams should help provide a better picture of what is to come for both teams in 2012. Washington Redskins fans will want to see how running back Tim Hightower looks in his first action since injuring his ACL last season. Hightower will join a crowded Washington backfield that already features Roy Helu and Evan Royster.

Fans of the Indianapolis Colts will want to continue to watch the maturation of Andrew Luck. While he may not light up the scoreboard every week, Luck can win over a lot of fans by continuing to show he has the mental makeup to succeed as an NFL quarterback.

This game figures to be one of the more competitive preseason games this week. Ucabet odds makers have currently listed the Washington Redskins as 3.5 point favorites with the total for the game set at 43.

More Social Security Money Withheld Because of Unpaid Student ...

About twice as many Social Security recipients are not receiving all of their Social Security payments this year because they have unpaid federal student loans, according to a report by SmartMoney.com.

According to a 1996 law, the federal government has the authority to withhold portions of Social Security payments if defaulted debt is owed to the government, including federal student loans.

?It?s quite extraordinary because normally Social Security benefits can?t be touched by creditors,? ?said Deanne Loonin, a staff attorney with the National Consumer Law Center.

From January through August 6 of this year, the government reduced the size of about 115,000 retirees? Social Security checks, almost double the department?s enforcement in 2011, according to data from the Treasury Department. In 2007, there were 60,000 cases and in 2000, there were only six cases.

While the amount that the government withholds can vary, ? at least $750 a month must be left untouched.

?when you think about it, $750 a month is less than the poverty line. It?s not a lot of money for people to have,? said Loonin.

Loonin said she has worked with people who are often older and have their Social Security benefits withheld. They are delinquent on a range of loans, including those federal student loans parents ?took out ?for their children.

Many federal loans allow borrowers to request a reduction in loan payments or suspension based on hardship, such as total permanent disability.

The National Consumer Law Center in Boston has set up a website to assist borrowers to avoid default and to outline steps to take if they do default on a loan.

Couch-Potato Kids Are Top US Child Health Problem ... - Fitness News

FRIDAY, Aug. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Lack of exercise and obesity are the top two health concerns for U.S. children, according to adults who took part in a newly released national survey.

The respondents were asked to identify the 10 biggest health concerns for children in their communities, and 39 percent said it was lack of exercise, 38 percent said obesity and 34 percent said smoking and tobacco use.

The remaining top concerns listed in the poll from the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital were: drug abuse (33 percent), bullying (29 percent), stress (27 percent), alcohol abuse (23 percent), teen pregnancy (23 percent), Internet safety (22 percent) and child abuse and neglect (20 percent).

"Childhood obesity remains a top concern, and adults know it is certainly linked to lack of exercise," poll director Dr. Matthew Davis, associate professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and associate professor of public policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, said in a university news release.

"The strong perception that lack of exercise is a threat to children's health may reflect effective recent public health messages from programs such as First Lady Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move' campaign," he suggested. "But exercise offers many more benefits other than weight loss or preventing obesity -- such as better attention and learning in school and improved sense of well-being."

The poll's results varied based on respondents' race and ethnicity. Hispanic adults were more likely to rate obesity as a greater risk (44 percent) than lack of exercise (38 percent), and also rated drug abuse higher than smoking and tobacco use.

Black adults felt that smoking and tobacco use was the most serious health concern for children (43 percent). They also ranked racial inequality seventh on the list and gun-related injuries ninth.

Compared to whites, black and Hispanic adults ranked sexually transmitted diseases as a greater health concern for children.

"The strong connection of many of the top 10 child health concerns to health behaviors among children and adolescents underscores the importance of public programs and communication initiatives -- for example, those designed to prevent drug abuse, tobacco use, alcohol abuse and teen pregnancy," Davis said.

"Child health varies across communities, and these results emphasize a need for local programs that respect and address community-specific health priorities for youth," he added.

Transatlantic Blonde: Vax Rapide Ultra Carpet Cleaner

I don?t??think anyone would be likely to call us house proud. Don?t get me wrong, our house isn?t dirty but despite being less than three years old we?ve managed to build up an impressive level of scuffing, staining and general baby/ toddler/ dog related dirty marks on our house, which somehow we never get round to finding the time or the inclination to fix. Our carpets are no different. A potty training toddler, a mucky dog and an amazing propensity to spill red wine, Irn Bru or pretty much any beverage which stains will take their toll on carpets in a relatively small time, particularly if the carpets in question are a rather fetching light beige colour.

As far as I was aware, carpet cleaners were giant industrial units that you rent and then spend a full weekend wrestling with in a vain attempt to rejuvenate your tired floors. Even when we got the opportunity to review the VAX Rapide Ultra 2 carpet cleaner, I was sceptical. I assumed that that a cleaner which you could purchase and keep in the home wouldn?t get the results you would get from an industrial type cleaner and I was sure shampooing carpets would be a huge amount of effort. Balancing a little boy who loves attention, work and general household chores takes up most of our time, spending what little free time we get shampooing our carpets is not my idea of good fun.

In actual fact cleaning carpets with the Rapide Ultra 2 is no more effort than hoovering. The unit looks like a bagless vacuum. It comes with a spray wand which you use to pre-treat the carpets: think watering a lawn but indoors. A general spray of the solution, plus extra on any heavily stained areas took us a few minutes. After leaving for 15 minutes you can use the unit itself much in the same way you use a hoover. There?s a trigger on the handle, when you pull this down the VAX is putting cleaning solution on the carpet, take your finger off and its sucking up all the water and dirt and grime which comes with it. It was really easy to get the hang of: trigger down while you push the VAX away, washing the carpet, trigger off when you bring it back to you sucking up all the mess. It really was as quick and as easy as running a vacuum over the carpets. One look at the reservoir which collects the dirty liquid and you can tell that it?s working. Depite our carpets not looking *that* bad, they produced and impressive dark brown liquid which had more than a passing resemblance to Coca Cola. Impressive but a little gross to think of all that grime sitting in your carpets.

The results surprised me too. The carpets looked noticeably brighter all over and the more heavily stained areas faded after one use and were gone after two. Spilled Coke and Irn Bru weren?t a problem, neither were muddy dog?s paw prints or little marks left by a toddler who didn?t quite make the toilet in time. We first used the VAX a few months ago and we?ve busted it out a couple of times a month since then, since it?s so quick and easy. The carpets look as good as they have since they were brand new, now we just need to find a magic machine for peanut butter stains on our couches and crayon marks on the walls. We live in hope anyway?

Income, 'screen time' affect soda, junk food consumption

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Preschoolers from low-income neighbourhoods and kids who spend more than two hours a day in front of a TV or video-game console have at least one thing in common: a thirst for sugary soda and juice, according to research from the University of Alberta.

Researchers from the faculties of Physical Education and Recreation, School of Public Health and Medicine & Dentistry surveyed parents to assess the dietary habits of 1,800 preschoolers in the Edmonton region as part of a larger study on diet, physical activity and obesity.

Researchers found that 54.5 per cent of four- and five-year-olds from poorer neighbourhoods drank at least one soda per week -- far more than the 40.8 per cent of kids from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Preschoolers from low-income areas also drank less milk and consumed more fruit juice, which, like soda, is linked to rising sugar intake associated with childhood obesity.

"When you're looking at that age group, and such a large percentage of very young kids in the study are consuming a large amount of soda, it's quite concerning," said study co-author Kate Storey, a registered dietitian and assistant professor in the School of Public Health.

"If you're drinking a lot of soda and fruit juice, that can displace consumption of water and milk, which are important not just for quenching thirst, but for developing healthy bones and teeth, and health and wellness in general."

The study, part of a larger project looking at nutritional habits of preschoolers, is among the first to gather data on children of such an early age.

Screen time and sugar

Researchers found similar drinking habits among preschoolers who spent more than two hours of "screen time" per day -- watching TV or playing video games. Kids from poorer neighbourhoods sat in front of screens more often, and drank larger volumes of sweetened beverages.

"Dietary behaviour and intake patterns are influenced heavily by what happens in the first few years with children, and they maintain those patterns throughout childhood and into adolescence," said study co-author John C. Spence, associate dean of research in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.

"In addition to basic health education, this study identifies a need in how we're dealing with poverty and recognizing there's more to poverty than simply the number of dollars people have. Many families live in places that might not be very healthy for them and, as a result, they make unhealthy food choices."

A companion study involving the same group of preschoolers also looked at the types of foods they ate and whether they followed recommendations in Canada's Food Guide.

Researchers found that just 30 per cent of children ate enough fruits and vegetables, and 23.5 per cent consumed the recommended amount of servings of grain products. The same problem did not exist with milk and meat or alternatives -- a respective 91 per cent and 94 per cent of kids ate recommended servings.

Poor neighbourhood, poor food choices

As with sweetened beverages, children from low- and medium-income neighbourhoods were more likely than kids in high-income areas to eat foods like potato chips, fries, candies and chocolate.

Those results presented an "alarming pattern," said Spence, who suggests it is possible families are choosing high-calorie foods because they are cheap and convenient. But, he added, the neighbourhood itself could also be a factor in food choices.

"There are cities in North America where, literally, you have food deserts. If you wanted to go out and buy some lettuce and tomatoes, you'd have to travel very far -- very likely without a car. You're not going to do that every time you want to get some food, so maybe you're going to resort to the convenience store down the road."

At least one glimmer of hope is that children who attended daycare or kindergarten were significantly less likely to reach for junk. Storey said that illustrates how education can make a difference and lead to healthier eating habits, regardless of what's happening at home.

"You can start making a difference in different places. It calls for action in multiple settings, schools and communities, for example. That light-bulb moment can happen in a variety of places."

The studies were published in the August issue of Public Health Nutrition and the summer edition of the Canadian Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research.

PJ Media ? Towards a Rational Immigration Policy

Over the past few years, confusion has developed among some in the conservative movement who have allowed a legitimate concern over border security to become conflated with anti-immigration politics. As this confusion threatens to saddle the Republican Party with a platform that would be both detrimental to the nation and catastrophic to conservatism?s political prospects, it is imperative, at this point, that we step back and consider, on the basis of first principles, what a proper immigration policy should be.

It should be clear that the bedrock foundation of any rational immigration policy should be to seek the benefit of America, rather than that of potential or existing immigrants, or any other particular group either supportive or antagonistic to them. That said, let us consider the effect of immigration upon our economic well-being.

In any economy, the entire population is supported by the part of it that is of working age. Therefore, it behooves any society to seek to maximize the ratio of working-age citizens to the total. Other things being equal, it follows that the most attractive acquisition a society can make is a young adult, whose childhood and education have already been paid for, but whose entire working life still lies ahead. Of course, all other things are not equal. Those with more skills are greater prizes, as they cost more to create and are likely to be more productive in life. This being the case, it is absurd to deny young foreigners who graduate American universities a path to citizenship.

This logic remains valid, albeit with less clarity, for young adults of a lesser eminence but still, on-net, above-average prospects, including but not limited to those in the military or college-accepted high school graduates who would be enfranchised by the DREAM act.

This being the fundamental economic reality, the primary counter argument that has been mustered against it has been that of labor protectionism. Thus, for example, in a recent PJ Media article attacking Mitt Romney?s proposal to guarantee a green card to every foreigner who earns a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) degree in the United States, Jessica Vaughan, the director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, writes:

As for stapling the green card to the STEM diploma, this is little more than a marketing tool for U.S. universities to attract more foreign students into paying for degrees in fields that are already saturated. There is no shortage of STEM professionals in the United States; on the contrary, the census shows that there are 1.8 million American engineers who are unemployed or working in other professions.

Setting aside criticism of its questionable statistic (the total number of U.S. unemployed is 13 million), the illogic of this argument is astonishing. Where, pray tell, does Ms. Vaughan imagine that jobs come from? Are they a fixed resource with only so many to go around? Then, is it the case that there were 150 million jobs available here when the pilgrims landed and they have now been filled up? Are the present high American unemployment rates actually being caused by overpopulation? If so, why then were unemployment rates three times as high in 1932, when the U.S. workforce was 1/3 its present size?

No, jobs are not a resource that exists separately from people, jobs are created by people. Immigrants are notoriously entrepreneurial, and the statistics back up the stereotype. While immigrants comprise 13 percent of the American population, they own 18 percent of small businesses and, according a recent study by the Fiscal Policy Institute, were responsible for 30 percent of the growth of U.S. small businesses over the past two decades.

So immigrants as a whole are net job creators. But of all immigrants, STEM graduates are by far the most promising because their advanced training allows them to create not only small businesses, but large ones, including such recent examples as Intel, SpaceX, Google, eBay, Nvidia, and Yahoo. The nation is indeed suffering from a shortage of such people.

Furthermore, the idea that by excluding immigrant talent from the U.S. workforce we can prevent it from competing with Americans is risible. Rather, by excluding skilled or educated foreigners, we guarantee that they will compete with American workers and businesses from their home countries, which will pay them less or allow them to hire local labor at lower than U.S. pay scales. As a result, the jobs, industrial capabilities, and tax revenue that they could have created here will be created over there instead, while America?s position in the world market will be further eroded. To cap it all, by giving up the effort to compete for such talent without a fight, we effectively build a Berlin Wall for the benefit of our foreign competition, allowing them to retain skilled people without making the concessions to both liberty and living standards that would otherwise be forced upon them.

Vaughan objects to American universities financing themselves by charging out-of-state tuition to foreign students. But what?s not to like? Foreign students that come to the U.S. and pay triple the tuition of their American counterparts provide a major subsidy to our educational system. Each such person effectively pays not only for his own college education, but that of two Americans as well. If we were to add the incentive of a green card to the degree, the numbers of such people would expand considerably and make university education much more affordable for Americans.

Muscle Building Tips That Will Work For You | Health and fitness today

What type of muscle building routine do you use? This is not always easily answered. It is common for folks to work on building their muscles independently, and though they might succeed, they might also grow frustrated. Keep reading for some muscle building tips, and you are likely to find some great ideas you have not put to use yet.

If you plan on using creatine, use it with caution when taking it for any extended amount of time. Make sure not to use these types of supplements at all if you have any type of kidney problem. Another possible effect of creatine supplementation is adverse effects on the heart muscle, including arrhythmia and heart muscle cramps. Teenagers could be at even more risk than adults. Make certain that you are taking these supplements in their recommended safe quantities.

There?s a better way to do your bicep curls. When some people do a bicep curl, they do not get all the benefits they can. They are unable to move the dumbbells past parallel, not getting the most out of the last half of the curl. However, the strongest portion of curls is the upper part. Do your barbell curl sitting down to avoid losing the benefit of this exercise.

Make sure you eat foods that are high in protein before doing your workout. Prior to doing your workout, to have 20 grams of whey protein. This will give your muscles a nice head-start to recovery to help lessen the chances they are used as fuel in your workout.

Every muscle building routine should contain three classic exercises. These body-building exercises include dead-lifts, bench presses and squats. These compound exercises can make you stronger and improve your muscle tone as well as increasing your muscle mass. Try to include variations of these workout staples each time you exercise.

A lot of people fail to use proper technique when lifting weights because they are too focused on speed. No matter the exercise, a steady pace that focuses on technique will offer the best results over repetitions pushed out too quickly. Be patient and make sure that your routines are executed in the proper way.

Protein is a necessity for adding muscle mass to your body. Protein is essential to building muscle, and not eating enough protein can actually make you lose muscle mass. A good measure for your muscle building diet is a gram of protein every day for every pound of your weight.

Focus on building the major muscle groups first. You can do this by focusing on the higher chest, your upper back and your shoulders. Train these specific areas. When you do this, your waist will look smaller, and the rest of you will look bigger.

Building stronger and bigger muscles requires the proper information and techniques. Take note of the advice availed to you here, and see if any of it can assist your muscle building plans. With knowledge, dedication and the proper techniques, you can achieve your muscle building goals

Brain's code for pronouncing vowels uncovered: Discovery may hold key to restoring speech after paralysis

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? Scientists at UCLA and the Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology, have unraveled how our brain cells encode the pronunciation of individual vowels in speech. Published in the Aug. 21 edition of Nature Communications, the discovery could lead to new technology that verbalizes the unspoken words of people paralyzed by injury or disease.

"We know that brain cells fire in a predictable way before we move our bodies," explained Dr. Itzhak Fried, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We hypothesized that neurons would also react differently when we pronounce specific sounds. If so, we may one day be able to decode these unique patterns of activity in the brain and translate them into speech."

Fried and Technion's Ariel Tankus, formerly a postdoctoral researcher in Fried's lab, followed 11 UCLA epilepsy patients who had electrodes implanted in their brains to pinpoint the origin of their seizures. The researchers recorded neuron activity as the patients uttered one of five vowels or syllables containing the vowels.

With Technion's Shy Shoham, the team studied how the neurons encoded vowel articulation at both the single-cell and collective level. The scientists found two areas -- the superior temporal gyrus and a region in the medial frontal lobe -- that housed neurons related to speech and attuned to vowels. The encoding in these sites, however, unfolded very differently.

Neurons in the superior temporal gyrus responded to all vowels, although at different rates of firing. In contrast, neurons that fired exclusively for only one or two vowels were located in the medial frontal region.

"Single neuron activity in the medial frontal lobe corresponded to the encoding of specific vowels," said Fried. "The neuron would fire only when a particular vowel was spoken, but not other vowels."

At the collective level, neurons' encoding of vowels in the superior temporal gyrus reflected the anatomy that made speech possible-specifically, the tongue's position inside the mouth.

"Once we understand the neuronal code underlying speech, we can work backwards from brain-cell activity to decipher speech," said Fried. "This suggests an exciting possibility for people who are physically unable to speak. In the future, we may be able to construct neuro-prosthetic devices or brain-machine interfaces that decode a person's neuronal firing patterns and enable the person to communicate."

The study was supported by grants from the European Council, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the Dana Foundation, Lady David and L. and L. Richmond research funds.

Corradino D'Ascanio - Automotive Pioneer| ZigWheels.com

While today's generation continues to drool over the youthful yet retro styling cues of the recently launched Vespa, it gets its inspiration from the original spar-framed Vespa that was designed by Corradino D'Ascanio and went into production in 1946

?

Aeronautical engineer and inventor by profession, D?Ascanio like most Italians, found himself unemployed during World War II. It was during this time that he approached Ferdinando Innocenti who then saw scope for development of cheap private transport, and decided to produce a motor scooter. Innocenti gave D?Ascanio the job of designing a simple, strong and affordable scooter. The vehicle had to be easy to ride for men as well as women and be able to carry a passenger.

?

D?Ascanio hated motorcycles, mainly because they were uncomfortable, bulky and their wheels were difficult to change in case of a puncture. Despite this dislike, the Italian designed a revolutionary vehicle that changed the way scooters were made. He designed a scooter with a spar frame, a handlebar gear change and an engine mounted directly over the rear wheel. However Innocenti wanted to make use of a frame from rolled tubing in place of the spar frame which eventually led to a fallout between the two. D?Ascanio then took the design directly to Enrico Piaggio.

?

?

D?Ascanio?s design came as a blessing in disguise for Piaggio, whose aeronautical plants in Tuscany were razed to the ground during World War II. D?Ascania was given the task of redesigning the MP 5 prototype nicknamed Paperino. He eliminated the use of a chain with a stress bearing body and direct mesh, put the gear lever on the handlebar, and made use of a supporting arm similar to an aircraft carriage in place of a fork, and most importantly he designed a body that would protect the rider from getting dirty. It took D?Ascanio only a few days to improve on his idea and complete the first drawing which Piaggio?called Vespa as he thought it looked like a wasp.

When the Vespa was first presented to the public, it evoked divergent reactions, but Piaggio?did not stop production. It was only a matter of time before it was universally appreciated. Nearly 20,000 enthusiasts attended the Italian ?Vespa Day? in 1951 and Enrico?s business went beyond national borders by 1953. The scooter soon became so renowned that the French army ordered specially made Vespa models that were built to hold bazookas, whereas the Italian army asked Piaggio?for a scooter with a built in parachute.

?

In 1988 the Vespa crossed the ten-million mark, but what is commendable is the aeronautical engineer who hated motorcycles penned a scooter whose design is much appreciated even six decades after it was first produced. Over time Vespa evolved into a world famous brand with 130 models as of 2005 and still continues to do so.

(AP) ? Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are launching a multipronged attack on President Barack Obama Wednesday, hitting the president on health care, taxes and the debt as the GOP ticket seeks to gain momentum heading into the party's convention.

Obama, meanwhile, readied for a second straight day of criticism on the GOP ticket's proposals on education, an issue that resonates with middle-class voters.

Romney and Ryan, campaigning separately Wednesday, were to level their criticism of Obama in three key battleground states: Romney was campaigning in Iowa, while Ryan had stops planned in Virginia and North Carolina. The campaign was also hitting the airwaves with a new television advertisement linking Obama's divisive health care overhaul to cuts in Medicare.

The ad, titled "Nothing's Free," asserts that Obama raided $716 billion from Medicare in order to pay for his health care law. It's the first ad Romney's campaign has run focusing on health care since the Supreme Court upheld Obama's federal mandate in June. And it comes as the Republican ticket seeks to gain the upper hand on Medicare amid charges that Ryan's austere budget proposals would drastically change the popular federal benefit for seniors.

Romney has promised to roll back the Medicare spending cuts approved under Obama, while Ryan kept the cuts in his budget proposals. The campaign did not say where the health care ad would run.

Romney was flying Wednesday morning from Texas, where he held campaign fundraisers Tuesday, to Iowa. During remarks in the Midwestern battleground state, he planned to focus on the increases in the nation's debt during Obama's term.

Ryan, less than two weeks into his new role as GOP running mate, was focusing Wednesday on tax overhaul. The GOP campaign says Obama's calls for letting George W. Bush-era tax cuts on people earning more than $200,000 a year expire at the end of the year would hurt small businesses because many file as individuals.

Obama was campaigning Wednesday in Nevada, one of the states hit hardest by the nation's economic slowdown. The president planned to meet with teachers at a Las Vegas high school and promote his administration's plans to make higher education more affordable before speaking at a larger event at the school.

Campaigning in Ohio Tuesday, Obama accused Romney of being oblivious to the burdens of paying for college. The president's campaign sees education as another avenue for linking Romney to Ryan's budget, which calls for $115 billion in cuts to the Education Department.

In a new ad released Wednesday, the Obama campaign suggests Ryan's education cuts would lead to larger class sizes. A couple featured in the ad bemoans the prospect of increased class size and says Romney "cannot relate" to their desire to have the best public education system for their children.

The ad is running in Virginia and Ohio.
